After having a terrible experience with State Farm, we switched to Farmers and have multiple policies, 4 cars, homeowners, and an umbrella policy.  Overall I'd give Farmers a very good rating on their coverage, but there are a couple of things I'm concerned about and do not know if it's typical of all insurance companies.  I'm not sure how credit ratings affect insurance rates, especially if payments are always on time and the insured has a clean driving record.  However, we had a crazy item on our credit report that Farmers used to raise our rates, and the problem was that there was no way we could appeal the ruling even though I took our credit report to our agent and showed her a sterling credit report. The problem on our credit report was a $40 medical bill that we actually paid twice because we got so tired of trying to deal with inept clerks and insurance companies, and the credit report said we paid it late (the second time we paid it--which I have both canceled checks on).   I asked our agent how to appeal and showed her our great credit report, and she said she was sure it was great knowing us over the years, but there was no way to appeal.  She told us that if anything appears on your credit report, without examining the item, Farmers can raise your rates.  THAT'S A LICENSE TO STEAL!  There should be an appeal option for errors.  With today's phone systems and the difficulty to get to a live person, there are probably numerous errors in credit reports.  Our agent solved the problem by changing who was "head of household" and that reduced our rates, but there should be an appeal process for errors.
The other concern I have about Farmers is minor, and it's just a nuisance.  Their billing system needs overhaul.  We get 8 bills a year on our cars, one on our home, and one on the umbrella policy.  To make it more complicated, if we pay on time, the amount due is less than what is sent in the bill.  If I don't read it carefully, I pay too much and then another statement is sent with a credit applied to the next insurance billing period for just that vehicle.  When I do pay the ontime amount, I then receive another statement which has an unpaid amount and a credit amount which cancel each other out for the amount saved by paying on time.  Therefore, we receive 16 mailings a year on our cars plus the other policies.  Why not reduce rates and stop the duplicate mailings and the extra manpower necessary to generate all these statements?  I asked to get all the cars due at one time, but they would not do that.
I recommend Farmers for good coverage without being cheap if you have a claim, but their billing methods and lack of an appeal process for errors need adjustments.
