Chose Farm Bureau-Texas because family memebers had used them for years, knew the folks working there, and they are the only insurance place in town.
When I opened my policy I told them (the same people who knew my family and by extension, me) that I would be graduating from college in a month and would be taking a position out of state a month after that.
So, I signed up for the policy, one month later graduated from college, and two months after that moved out of state.
I called to change my address and was told that they could not cover me out of the state and would be dropping me immediately from coverage.  Dumbfounded, I asked why they had knowingly covered me in the first place.  They didn't have an answer.  Instead they had to "get back to me" on that one.  The next day they called and said they could cover me for the remainder of the policy but then would be dropping the coverage.
My annoyances 1) they covered me knowing that I would be moving out of state and 2) they couldn't or wouldn't recommend a Farm Bureau in my new state (Washington).  It seems to me it might have been easy to just transfer from a Farm Burearu-Texas to a Farm Bureau-Washington, but that was not an option. All of this I could live with though, all except 3) the level of customer service offered through all of this.  They actually treated me like I had done something wrong, like committed murder or theft.  So much for small town hospitality!

Interesting to know that I'm not the only one extremely dissatisfied with their customer service, or lack of. Here is a list of some of the things that my agent in Pocatello ID. is Good at...
1.) Collecting money
2.) Returning important phone calls in no less than 2 weeks
3.) False quotes (bait and switch)
4.) Lying
5.) Never actually sending proof of insurance or declaration of coverage
6.) Blaming other agents and office help for his mistakes on my policy
7.) Directly withdrawing unauthorized amounts from my checking account without any notification
Just a few reason to be aware when dealing with Farm Bureau in Pocatello ID.
8.) Not taking responsibility for any actions.

As a former insurance adjuster (I used to handle disputes on coverages and for home and auto policies), a person can not just "transfer" a policy from point a to point b. Especially on a renters/home owners policy. These are specially written to cover the particular property you are currently at. Policies are usually based on many things like demographics, geographics, number of losses as a whole in an area before the company takes a risk to write a policy. Also, the company may not even write policies in the new state you moved to. The agent also must be licensed in a particular state in order to even write policies so it may be the shear fact that the agent does not want to mislead you for your future policies.

But I do agree that it is a common customer courtesy that they should have informed you that the policy would need to be cancelled and that you would in fact need to have a brand new policy written for you when you got to Washington.

Anyone else reading this...just a heads up! When you move, tell your agent and get a new policy :-)

How dare you move out of state! Just kidding :) What a pain, I hope you have better insurance now. Thanks for sharing!
