It may be true that life is like a box of chocolates because you never know what you're going to get but Fannie May Candies has taken at least part of the mystery out of that -- no matter which piece you choose, you're going to get something delicious.
It wasn't that long ago that it looked like we might have to make the best of Easter (and other holidays) without Fannie May whether we liked it or not. The manufacture of these delicious treats had been taken over by another company and the beloved candy shops which had been in place in Chicago neighborhoods for years quietly disappeared and morphed into other businesses. After a (long dark) while, Fannie May rose again phoenix-like, making it possible for us to revert to our triumphant indulgences.
Where this candy is actually made now is a bit of a mystery but someone is apparently using the same sacred recipes and most people still think of this as being a Chicago confection. (Whenever I return from visiting someone in a different part of the country, one of the first things I do is to use the Fannie May website to dispatch a one-pound "Chicago Skyline" assortment as a "hospitality gift" from the Windy City. I think my lucky hosts love the box as much as its delicious contents!)
A few years ago, I helped my church with a fundraising project -- selling Fannie May Chocolates at work. Normally, I would have a problem marketing a life preserver to a drowning man but in this case I was able to sell $600 worth of Fannie May Pixies, Dixies, Victorias, Trinidads, and other types of candy in four days, just by showing the catalog around to my co-workers on the 18th floor at the Bank. That's how good this candy is!
I'm sure the good folks at Fannie May are looking out for our best interests when they thoughtfully insert nutritional information with their products. We're supposed to be reading all this and making thoughtful decisions about saturated fats and calorie contents, I guess. It also may be true that somebody somewhere gives this data a second look but I wouldn't bet on it. Definitely, Fannie May is not the staff of life as far as healthy diets are concerned but it is fun now and then and not quite as horribly expensive as the fancier brands like Godiva. (And sugar-free treats are also available.)
You may not have a Fannie May store in your immediate area but you can shop through their website -- or better yet access their website through MyPoints and get credit for the dollars you spend. After all, Easter is almost here and Fannie May is where the most discriminating Easter bunnies shop for chocolate bunnies, chickie pops, and cream eggs. If you only eat one goodie this year, you should try a Fannie May Raspberry Cream Egg. When it comes to assorted fruit flavored fillings, Fannie May is second to none. There are many different kinds and -- as Willie Wonka would say -- "the strawberries taste like strawberries and the raspberries taste like raspberries!"
