Facebook —

Social networking sites are all the rage in the younger generation, and sometimes we "elders" feel left out.  So I decided to find out what all of the excitement was about concerning Facebook; it started out as a mild curiosity but it has now turned into a near-obsession, and dare I say fun.

Facebook started out as a place where college students could keep track of each other and now it has turned into an international social networking space where not only college students can meet and greet, but also old high school buddies, and business associates as well.

Facebook is an involved website.  Anyone can set up an account and populating said account is as simple or as involved as one may want it to be.  For instance, you can list your favorites: music, TV Shows, movies, books, and quotations.  And of course the assorted personal information can also be entered, like activities, interests, education, and work history.

Friends can also be found on Facebook. And I have found quite a few; three from my high school, quite a few from my various alums, and still more from the various websites I write reviews for.  One can also join Facebook sponsored groups sporting all sorts of worthy and not-so-worthy causes.

My Viewpoint

I like Facebook, and I am liking it more and more every day; in fact the site is becoming a bit of an obsession.  This is not only because you yourself go, and impart all sorts of information about yourself, but because the way the site is structure you feel as though you are actually making a connection with other members.

Add to that the ability release Twitter-like updates about yourself from either the website or mobile device, add personal photos, send personal messages to other members, write on other members (public) walls, and with Facebook you have a receipt for a fun, engaging website that all can share and find something to like, if not love.

I had been avoiding joining - worried about private information getting out. But two weeks ago a friend from High School contacted me (using my classmates information) and suggested I join FB as a bunch of our old HS friends were gathering there. Turns out to be a great way to connect with friends from the past. I am unable to contact people via the classmates because I do not pay the "gold" fee, so this is great because it's free. :) Great review!

Hey! I joined Facebook a month ago because my brother was on there. I've caught up with some of my high school friends. Facebook is a cool site and has become an obsession for me as well. Very nice review. =D

Despite the temptiing review, I'm afraid to even look at Facebook for Jo's reason. I spend enough time on the computer as it is!

Ha! That worked. Nice photo of the carriers on your page, too.

I tried looking you up on FB, but no luck. Same for Patty. If you want to add me, though, simply look me up under my real name of Alex Diaz-Granados and send me an add request!

HI to you my friend! I am well, how are you? I never thought of using the share feature the farm out my reviews on the unsuspecting, but then I am new to the whole FB thing. Send me a friend request the next time you are on-line with FB, and thank you for the accolades.

I love Facebook!

Hi, ex-submariner! How are you? Wouldn't you know it, I just exited from my own FB page to come here to Viewpoints. I'm not sure if I am obsessed, but I do go there regularly and use the "share" function to show off my reviews. I've also reconnected with four high school classmates and one friend who graduated two years before I did....Cool site and, dare I say, you did a fine review of it.

Something always suffers. :-) Hopefully the obsession will wear off over time.

In the past few months I have had several friends trying to get me to join and I try to get them over to Viewpoints :+) I've never even been to the facebook website. I was rerouted to myspace one time when looking for a restaurant. This is the only social networking site I am a member of and let me tell you, I have become obsessed with this! I can't imagine trying to keep up with more than one--how do you do it? ~Gigi

I keep hearing about it, maybe someday I will give in and give it a try. . . after the girls are in school . . . then I may be able to indulge an obsession.

Jo wrote on Dec 5, 2008 at 12:54PM

I can't have another obsession but I know so many people love FACEBOOK! It even came with my cell phone - really.

MikeMaroon wrote on Dec 4, 2008 at 10:45PM

You are on Facebook? Didn't know!!!! ;P Oh, that's right........you are right, it can be an obsession! I, however, like Patty, am obsessed with MyYearbook. It's pretty flashy! Oooooooohhhhh flashy things!!!

Hummm, never heard of My Yearbook; thanks Patty, yet another site to check out!

PattyTherre wrote on Dec 4, 2008 at 8:58PM

Facebook is the one site I don't belong to. I have found myself deeply involved with MyYearbook which is similar. It's truly addictive!
