Facebook —

Anyone who says they hate Facebook and entered college in 2004, 2005 or 2006 is a big fat liar. It doesn't matter whether you're a weekly, daily or monthly Facebook user, if you joined Facebook between 2004-2006 you probably have an addiction problem like me.

I like to brag that I'm an original Facebooker. News flash: I am! I joined Facebook when there were less than 25 schools in the network. I just happened to be lucky enough to receive my Northwestern University email address from the University in May 2004 when a high school classmate of mine suggested I join Facebook. Well, I created my account and stared blankly at the screen for two months. I mean, what am I supposed to do with this?, I asked myself day after day. The "original Facebook," as those few first users and I refer to it, was nothing more than a profile picture, some personal information and a place to connect to other incoming college classmates. I made my first dorm friend through Facebook (and sized up my freshman year roommate, too)!

It didn't take long for Facebook to add Photo Album features so that members could show off their intoxicated rampages around campus. The Wall was soon to follow. I mean, c'mon, who would want to walk down the hallway to talk to their friend when it was so much cooler to post a comment on their Wall? Not me, of course. The last major change in the first stage of Facebook's many facelifts over the years was to open up Facebook to (gasp!) state schools. Gone were the days of Ivy League, Stanford and Northwestern Facebook elitism. But, hey, at least I was able to stay in touch w/ my friends back in Minnesota.

I started my sophomore year of college at NU in the fall of 2005 an official Facebook addict. I was logging in dozens of times a day to leave funny posts on my friends' Walls or simply check out the most recent picture uploads from friends in far-away states. I became pretty proud of my "original Facebook" membership and became incredibly irked when my younger sisters could join because the website was opened up to high schools.

Then came different city and state networks.

Then came different country networks.

Then came Facebook world domination! No, really. Have you read a newspaper lately?

Facebook's layout is clean and appealing, there's no annoying music like on (cough, cough) some other social networking sites, and there are fun applications to add to your profile to show your interests. However, if you're an "original," keep your applications to a bare minimum - if you add any to your profile at all. Applications aren't appropriate for those truly dedicated to maintaining the original Facebook elitism standard!

Facebook is far and away the best way to keep in touch with friends, but I think that's because I've grown up with Facebook. My friends and I aren't accustomed to text messaging anymore, although with Facebook text messaging and iPhone capabilities we're getting back in to the ancient art form of texts. More than anything, Facebook was a fun and easy way to stay distracted in lecture back at NU.

And now? Well... now Facebook keeps me busy by writing a review of it at work. :)
