Since I joined Facebook this spring, I have been on it almost every single day. I have met new Facebook friends from England, Canada, and the East Coast in "Fan Club" discussions about my favorite books, movies, and music. It's really fun to meet people who live in different all over the world who share your interests. There are different ways to contact your friends, from messaging to writing on their "Wall" to "Poking" them--or "Superpoking" them! You'll have to log on to Facebook to see what I mean.

Two of my favorite applications are Lil Green Patch and Books iRead. Lil Green Patch allows you to send virtual flowers to your friends. For every ten plants you send, you save 1 sq ft of rainforest land! Since I am a big reader, I enjoy Books iRead because I can rate and review my favorite books, recommend new reads to my Facebook friends, and take quizzes about any literary subject from Shakespeare's most famous quotes to Jane Austen's most memorable characters. Also, I have created quizzes on Books iRead about my favorite books, Great Expectations and The Great Gatsby; other users have already taken my quizzes! It feels good to be able to contribute to the site as well as having access to hundreds of fun applications.

I really like Facebook's privacy options: you can block any application or any other user you want, discreetly. Another option you have is to block e-mail updates from the applications you choose--I appreciate this because messages such as "This application has been updated! Check it out!" can get annoying when sent in bunches.

Be careful! Facebook is potentially addictive. But if you find that in the hours you spend on Facebook, you get to know people who you otherwise would not have met; you have great discussions about Pink Floyd and Casablanca; and you help save the planet with applications like Lil Green Patch, then your time is time well-spent.
