I looked at many Tonneau Covers for my truck and each have their own Pro's and Con's. I wanted something to cover the bed to keep the weather out but also be easy to remove when I needed more space to carry things. I settled for a Soft Cover that allowed me to be able to switch modes whenever I needed too.

Extang Full Tilt Tonneau Cover

A local dealer in Indiana was my destination to have my Extang Tonneau Cover installed. I made an appointment with them and they had me all set to go in less than an hour. The main frame of this system is attached to the bed rails on my truck. The Cover assembly lifts up similar to the trunk of a car with 2 Gas Shocks that allow it to open and close smoothly and add some rigidity to the cover. The cover assembly is all aluminum and has 3 removable cross braces that give the top its shape and help keep it tight. The cover is a waterproof tarp that is both strong and flexible and is held onto the cover frame with snaps.

This cover assembly weighs 30lbs. and by popping the shocks off and then raising the cover to about 80 degrees I can remove the cover assembly to carry high loads. This takes less than 5 minutes and is a breeze to accomplish. Putting it back on is just as quick and I can do it by myself with no problems. Unless the wind is blowing then I need a bit of help or I go flying...lol

The cover is held in place while driving by 2 cover levers one on each side that hold it securely closed. Each one can be adjusted to the tightness you are comfortable with. I also put a bungee cord on each side as I like the extra security I get from putting them on the levers.

The cover itself can be adjusted for Summer/Winter conditions as the snaps have 2 positions they can be put in. I find it easier just to remove the top in the winter as there are 36 snaps and it is a pain to flip them around with the arthritis in my hands. Besides I like to put snow in the bed for traction in the winter. I could use bricks or blocks but then you have to take them out again when it gets warm. Snow removes itself when it gets warm...lol.

I have had the cover on my truck 4 years now and it still looks new because I clean it and then wipe it down with a cover conditioner after I wash the truck each time. I have only had one problem with the cover. My daughter borrowed my truck once to get some ice blocks and couldn't open the tailgate so she unsnapped the cover and ripped 2 snaps off from doing it the wrong way. It was an easy fix as I had 4 spare snaps from when I bought the cover and I had it fixed in about 10 minutes.

There is a lot of controversy over to cover or not to cover for gas mileage. I do know that without the cover I get 18mpg. and with it on I can get 20mpg so I know it helps me save gas. If it were a hard cover I probably would get a little better mileage as the soft cover is not rigid like a hard cover would be.

Bottom Line

Extang has a wide variety of cover styles to suit your tastes and needs and they even have different colors to suit your taste. They have excellent customer service and their dealers are very good as well. Whether you want a simply design such as I got or if you prefer the hard covers Extang has a cover for you. Their website can show you all the different covers they offer at www.extang.com

Oh I got some looks when I went through there after I got it. There was a big traffic jam in Atlanta and this guy rolled down his window and ask me what kind of mufflers I had. When I told him they were straight pipes from the converters back, he smiled and said he was gonna do his pick up like that too! ;)

This is something I have wanted to get for the back of my truck. I am still learning it and always afraid of things flying out of the back. Nothing worse then hitting the person in back of you with toilet paper :)
