When I heard about the movie EXPELLED coming out, my first reaction to it was, "Oh Brother, another movie with skewed so-called facts in another attempt to manipulate the general population about what to think."

I decided that I would probably not be going to see that movie.

Then I saw a few previews of it and changed my mind.

WHAT CHANGED MY MIND ABOUT THIS MOVIE?

You see, when I learned that this movie was an expose about something very serious affecting the culture of the United States I was all ears. The freedom to think and pursue truth is one of the values that I hold precious and when that is under attack, then I am prone to pay attention.

I barely know who Ben Stein is- I think I saw him on a comedy once.

I do not know what anyone is saying about this movie- I purposely stayed away from it, because as a lover of free thought, I wanted to see this movie completely unblased. I only knew what I heard on a brief interview in passing on TV before the movie came out, the general jist of it.  I did suspect that there would be an outcry of certain people afraid of this movie, however- the very people threatened by free thinkers.

WHAT SURPRISED ME ABOUT THIS MOVIE

What really surprised me is that my children refused to go see Horton Hears A Who or Nim's Ilsand while my husband and I went to see EXPELLED. They wanted to see this movie- my youngest being the biggest surprise- she is nine years old.

When I was a college student, I experienced some very difficult and intense targeting because I dared to ask questions about things. I wanted to know- and learning is through exploration, so I ask questions about everything.

However, not everything is open to questions in college. In fact, college is more of an indoctrination seminary to predetermined pathways of thought that are not allowed to be questioned or challenged IN ANY WAY.

For this reason I was failed in some classes and almost was not allowed to graduate from college because certain teachers reacted in hate to some simple heart felt questions I asked with harmless sincerity. I meant no harm, I just wanted to learn answers to my questions.

I was surprised to see this movie EXPELLED is about this very thing. People who are silently exterminated from jobs or their standing in society simply because they questioned the current belief system accompanying scientific thought of some people based upon the old writings of a man named Charles Darwin in the late 1800's.

As a science enthusiast, I have always been taught to embrace the testing and trying method for science. If you do not test, you do not grow. If you do not grow, you can not learn. If you stop learning, then you become a fanatic stuck in a infomrational cesspool rut of partial truths. This often eads to creation of any substantiaion you can think of to support those beliefs to keep them alive since all influence of fresh thought have been closed out.

In the science community, there is a very strange movement or intellecutal strangulation that seeks to do this very thing- close off all growth in knowledge through trial and error and questioning and seeking. They instead fanatically pursue the sustenance of archaic thought which can not longer stand up to modern day scrutiny- at any cost- often with vicious hatred and vindictiveness.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS MOVIE?

Ben Stein made this movie because he stumbled upon some very prestigious men and women who have titles and achievements that are far beyond the dreams of many people, yet these brilliant minds dared to question that perhaps this archaic belief system pushed forth in the late 1800's was not entirely accurate. For this they were expelled from their jobs and many black balled due to lies and gossip to keep them from their field of work in science.

Ben Stein sought to find out about this and follows a trail of people to find that this was not a limited few fringe people that were being hit here, but intelligent high-standing people with no fantaticism at all from around the world. These people dared to think outside the box and for that they were punished and recipients of vicious hate and name calling.

He interviewed the people who had been targeted as well as those who targeted them, wanting to be fair, but few of those who targeted these scientists would participate. It reminded me of the spoiled child who cheated at baseball when we were kids and then they would take their stuff and go home when challenged.

What I was very interested to see was that not only were these people interviewed (which were very interesting to listen to , by the way) but there was an exploration of certain belief systems which led to terrible consequences in history that led to the slaughter of many.

The film was very well done and many of the things in it, I happened to know already through my long time in depth studies over the years after the way I was treated by asking simple honest questions in college.

However, some of the things in this movie have been hidden from many in the population who have not been aware of the manipulation of thought in our society. It is important that everyone learn about this- or our freedoms will be gone before we know it and it will be too late to turn back the tide of danger.

HOW EASY WAS THIS MOVIE TO WATCH?

I am a thinker, so I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Anything that makes me wonder, want to do my own research to confirm or disprove something is invigorating.

What really iimpressed me was that my son and daughter were mezmerized through it as well, My nine year old was a little bit wiggly in the last few minutes, but all of the way home, she kept saying how much she enjoyed that movie.

This is probably because the very interesting way that this movie was done. There were a lot of funny old movie clips accenting different statements and points as they are presented. Visually, it is interesting and keeps your attention.

The interviews and way that you the viewer are brought on this trip with Ben Stein is almost charming and refreshing. I am tired of being assaulted by computerized images and overdosed with over the top action in movies. This movie made us all want to keep watching. Each member of my family is very different and each of us sat through the movie attentively watching.

WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THIS MOVIE BEST

What I liked about this movie best is that it is done in a very objective perspective. It is not done from any particular religious perspective at all- there are scientists fromm all belief backgrounds(including atheists) which have similar perspectives on the deep concern that free thought is no longer being tolerated in the scientific community.

This movie is not about scientists at all- it is about society and how the intolerance for freedom of thought in science is not only affecting education but it is causing intolerance for those who are considered useless eaters- inconvenient- or in the way, the attitude of eimination of the weak or the inconvenient people is growing at an alarming rate.

MY FINAL RECOMMENDATIONS

I think that everyone should see this movie. You do not have to believe anything in particular in order to benefit from this movie. You just have to be willing to think- not blindly accept anything- just think for yourself.

I can not stress enough how important this movie's premise is. I have met people from many parts of the world, and the kind of thought that is being intolerant of anything or anyone that thinks differently from Darwinism is what always leads eventually to genocide, in minimum the slaughter and torture of people all over the world.

The fanaticism toward the Darwinist path of thought seems to lead to a love affair with death and a fight of those who think they are superior trying to get rid of those that they say are not- helping along the evolutionary scale (in their minds).

There is a reason why many people I have known growing up from parts of the world that were taken over by communists or other totalitarian regimes have told me that the first ones to be hunted out and slaughtered were the free thinkers.

It happened in Central America, Europe, Africa, Germany- any place where challenges of free thought were not tolerated, and led to suffering beyond words.

Much of this is supported by presentation within the movie, as well as my own vast personal experience from people I have known over time.

Now is the time to see this movie, because those who are determined to silence the free thinkers will no doubt be trying to remove this from the theaters and the hands of anyone they can.

If you enjoy thinking and being challenged to search out matters for yourself- this movie is excellent.

If you prefer to go in denial and stare blank faced at mindless entertainment- go see the movie- you can wait for the movie clips interspersed within the film for your entertainment. Who knows? You may learn something despite it! ;D

We have not seen this movie. I have read all the reviews and comments here at Viewpoints. Fascinating. Apparently this movie has touched on many issues. Not that I agree with Darwin's theory - I'd just like to acknowledge back in his day he was the one thinking outside box. I have always done better thinking and pursuing certain things outside the box. It gets cramped in some of those boxes. Look at as examples, the philosophers from times of ancient Greece onward, explorers, and DaVinci and Tesla..... All questioned "why?" and "why not?" Hey, we physically challenged people very often have to think "outside the box" just to survive. Differences in people should be acknowleged and celebrated. We are all part of one family - human.

Different strokes. I'm from the South, so I always thought I was pretty liberal. Then, I discovered that I'm really rather middle of the road. I can live with that. I enjoy other views. I'm pretty set in my own ways. But I appreciate the differences in our society.

Interesting link. Personally, I don't believe in creationism, and don't think it has a place in public schools. I do, however, believe in freedom of religion and freedom of expression. I don't believe it's useful or effective to shut anyone up - even when their beliefs or values aren't the same as my own. I also think there's a smugness about some corners of the scientific community...a paternalistic, "we know what's good for you and your children" tone, that I find disconcerting and not unlike the same tone one gets from very extreme fundimentalist religious groups.

I really like this review and the back-and-forth it's inspried. Living in SF, it's really clear to see how very alike the extreme right anf extreme left are, when it comes to being intolerant of "other" ideas.

If you want to see a really passionate review, check out her rant about abortion over at epinions. Make sure to note the part where she talks about her 4 year old son screaming at a receptionist for "killing babies". http://www.epinions.com/content_24714841732

In response to Caprig's comment from Apr 28, 2008 at 10:57AM:

Wow! That's extreme. I would suggest that people who don't like it or the idea just not go see it. That would take care of the problem I'd think. Oh, and I teach at a college. You'd have been fine in my class (-:

MikeMaroon wrote on Apr 28, 2008 at 1:31PM

Oh, and if anyone doesn't believe this type of thing is immediately attacked, just go over to Netflix, look up the movie and see how vehemently it is dragged through the mud!

MikeMaroon wrote on Apr 28, 2008 at 1:27PM

I think fear stagnates the ability to accept other's ideas. For some reason many otherwise intelligent folks defend to the death their opinions in fact of fact. Others try and make their opinions fact. Shoot, I work in an organization that doesn't want to hear new ideas, they just want "yes" men. It's sad. I'm like you, a free-thinker and am open to new ideas. I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't be...but, they really, really aren't. Great review!

I just heard that someone is trying to sue to have it taken from theaters! OMG it is amazing - I just sit here scratching my head...........so, see it before it leaves the theater- while it is still legal to be a free thinker. *chuckle*
