if you ask me what my favorite sci-fi/comedy is, it's this one! Far fetched? Maybe...but the one-liners remind you that this isn't reality; It's just plain FUN! This is for the b-movie fan in all of us with a far greater enfisess on special effects and saving the world one alien at a time; all while falling in love!
They casted some of the funniest, strongest actors in the correct roles. A diverse collection of actors make up the laugh-out-loud vignette into the everyday people getting their swerve on while taking out the bad-ass alien invaders... David Duchovny, (Heartbreaker) Orlando Jones, the token sidekick with a never-ending supply of one liners and gettin' messy with alien goo; Julianne Moore; Gorgeous yet clumsy love interest and most of the intelligence; Seann William Scott, The ambitious, not too bright screw-up (cutie-pie) who also seems to never run out of comedy moves just by "not getting it."
A chunk of space rock has crashed on Earth, and inside the dead looking rock is some goo teaming with alien DNA that starts growing aliens at an incredible rate...Duchovny and Jones are the first to discover the relentless group of baby aliens who tend to throw tantrums when things don't go their way and act out by eating people.
You inherently know who the good guys are and who the bad guys are. No middle ground there. The good guys are so charming and funny that you wanna lean in and kiss the screen and the (human) government bad guys are such A-holes that when they show up on the screen, something in you wishes the aliens would win...at least for now. There is always that one guy who wants to do "Blow everything to kingdom come, that'll fix it" butt-muncher who doesn't listen to reason and needs a good, swift kick in the teeth of reality.
The aliens are definitely not the type to blend into society, so when they start getting frisky about making Earth their B**ch, it's going to take the entire team of good guys to take them out behind the barn for a butt-whoopin'.
I was surprised at Julianne Moores comedy in this one...and the whole klutzy broad routine was her idea. I knew that David had it in him to get me guffawing but until now, had never been cast as anything but a straight-man. This time, he gets most the yuks, and his character makes you melt.
All in all, hysterical and cheer out-loud, feel-good film for everyone! It's wildly funny, filled with enough aliens for every taste, and from every scene to the next, you wish it would never end! Outrageous fun!!
