I received the Everex Stepnote for Christmas and loved it right away.  I really love the big screen it comes with and it has a very slim design for easy portability.  The one and only downside I have found is Windows Vista.  Not my favorite operating system and it took a little while to get used to... review »

I'm currently a full time students working on a Master's program so my computer is my life. I bought the Everex a few years ago because of the price (which was rather cheap if you didn't include the warranty, which sadly I did). It's not a terrible laptop but I thought the 17 inch screen would be nice...

I'll be honest, I bought the Everex StepNote because it was cheap.  It was my first laptop computer and saw no need to be extravagant.  I've also never bought a computer brand new from the store before.  When I got home and started this laptop up, imagine my surprise to find no Microsoft Word!  Right away I felt ripped off.  We worked our way through that and also learning how to use Vista, which I think the world is better off without.  Immediately, we found out we had to buy more memory.  It wouldn't download one game or c.d.  It was costing me extra money in after market items.  So...

I read the previous review and can agree that the way this laptop is packaged, it is not perfect.  However, with a quick memory upgrade and a little tweeking it is fabulous for the money.  I knew when I chose it that it didn't have enough memory to do what I wanted it to so I never actually used it with the amount of memory that came in it.  I also never used it with Vista on it....too many problems too much hassle.  I run Xp and have added memory and all is great.  I paid $300 for it and after 6 months of ownership, I feel that I have already gotten that out of it.  I was without a laptop... review »

I don't know what the designers of this computer were thinking, but the computer will not operate the way it should.  I am not a computer "geek", but it seems to me that the memory is not enough for the computer to operate as fast as it should.  The computer is equipped with Windows Vista Basic, which is good, but it seems to me the shared ram of 512mg just barely runs the programs.  Also, it comes with 1.5 processor, when it should probably be 2.  All in all, not a very good buy at $500.00, unless you only want to access your e-mil!
