When we moved into our house, our first son was seven months old and was doing a lot of crawling and rolling around.  We purchased a raised ranch which meant that there was a set of stairs that my son could easily fall down.  It was imperative that we purchase a gate that would be appropriate for the top of the stairway.  We found the Evenflo Secure Solutions Top of Stairs Wood Swing Gate and it was just what we needed.

The Facts

  • One-hand release swing gate is convenient for high-traffic areas or securing a room or stairway
  • Fits a variety of openings
  • Gate won't swing out over stairs
  • Removable swing-stop mechanism
  • Installed height is 31 inches
  • Expands from 27 to 42 inches in width
  • Easy to install and to remove
  • 4-point hardware mounting

My Experience

When my husband installed this gate at the top of our stairs, it was necessary for him to use his drill and mount some hardware.  I wasn't thrilled with the fact that we had to drill into our wall to install this gate but as long as my son was safe, it was worth it.  My son would pull himself up on the gate and shake it but thankfully, it was very secure.  It was actually so secure that many of my guests could not figure out how to get it open to come up or go down our stairs. In order to open this swing gate, a metal piece needs to be pushed and the gate, pulled up and out. Three years later, my second son was born so we continued to keep the gate installed. A few years later, even though the kids were old enough not to crawl or roll down the stairs, we kept it up because we now had a puppy. The gate was now securing the small puppy from falling down the stairs.  As my puppy grew into a dog, we still kept the gate up because the times when the gate was open, the dog would go down to the foyer and eat the cat's food. To this day, we still have this gate installed and it has been very durable.

My Final Viewpoint

The Evenflo Secure Solutions Top of Stairs Wood Swing Gate is extremely durable and versatile.  I believe this gate is still being sold for around $35 which is a very fair price for a product that lasts so long. I recommend this gate to anyone who has small children and/or pets that need to be kept upstairs. I am giving this gate a well deserved 5 star rating.

It is great for munchkins and as far as gate being tricky to open...it is only tricky to open if you don't know how to open it. Which is why I love it so much. We did all the normal childproofing that parents do and over time our older child learned how to open them all. This gate on the other hand he still doesn't know how and he is 3 1/2.

Sounds like a nice piece to add when you have munchkins running around. It's great to know that something is durable and you feel safe using it.

how great that I found your review today! i just wrote on the 6 safety products every parent should have and this gate is one of them for the top of the steps! I have to go see if I can direct people to this review from mine.

It's good to hear when something actually works, plus still does its job after so many years! Ron
