despite what some people might think. evanescence is not a metal band, they fall into the rock genre with various influences from different music genres; including metal but not enough to be considered an actual metal band.
this argument has been going on for as long as the band became famous. some people involved in the "metal" community claim that evanescence isn't a metal band, while others proclaim that evanescence is indirectly influenced by other bands like: lacuna coil, and co. even some popular publications consider evanescene a metal band usually considered part of the gothic metal and alternative metal genres.
amy had mentioned once in a interview that evanescence is influenced by metal, rock, classical and electronica. amy doesn't believe in labels but understands most people like to label her band's music. I think the reason why people are often comparing evanescence to other bands particulary from the metal genre: nightwish, lacuna coil, within temptation, etc. all four ladies look somewhat similar to each other: dark hair, light skin color, angelic vocal abilitys, and similar fashion sense.
speaking of vocal ability: amy's angelic vocals soar most of the time but fall short. it seems like she can hit high notes but sometimes there are times where amy's voice when reaching the higher notes tends to crack. her vocal range is lyric mezzo soprano, none the less her vocals are powerful and angelic but when comparing her to other vocalist like tarja (ex nightwish) and sharon (within temptation) her vocals tend to fall flat. especially when she sings live, but like most singers in the rock/metal genres they tend to flub notes which is understandable since they aren't lip syncing (a reason I like this band). she seems to do really well with acoustic songs, in which we can hear her beautiful voice.
I really like the songs: bring me to life, my immortal, callcertain pitch, her voice cracks me when you are sober, and a few others. I like how creative amy and co. are when they are writing these songs. like the call me when you are sober, even though she is no longer seeing shaun morgan (seether) she managed to put her frustration and sadness in song. even though her ex wasn't too happy, the fact that their relationship was brought out into the open like that. the way he handled it was professional, although he could have really made things much worse for amy.
the band had a minor set back when their debut album "fallen" rose high on the christian music charts. both amy and ben couldn't grasp the idea that their album was considered a christian rock album. both made it very clear that they are not a christian rock band, yet a majority of their songs (lyrics) are aimed at Christians.
former members: ben moody (guitar), rocky gray (drums) and john lecompt(guitar) formed we are the fallen with ben's friend marty o'brien (bass) and former american idol constistant carly smithson (vocals) into a new band: we are the fallen
a reflection of evanescene's first album and movement for the band and its fans to collaborate and appreciate the same interest in music.
most people would say that we are the fallen is a "evanescence" clone which the ben and co. claim diffrent.
the band went on hiatus for a time. amy got married and possibly writing songs for a solo album, also lending her voice for a couple of collaborations.
in june 09' amy posted a update that evanescence is working on a third album stated for realase in 2010.
despite some setbacks evanescence is still continuing to make music. for people who like female fronted bands then check this band out
