Most HelpfulAlot of my friends have been saying "Oh, Steve Carell is the same guy in every movie, blah blah blah." I personally don't believe that, but even if it were true, it works for him. It works extremely well. This movie is as good as it can be for the movie that it is. Does that make sense?
Plot: God asks...

Most HelpfulSimilar in theme to the hit comedy starring Jim Carrey, Bruce Almighty, the recently released family comedy, Evan Almighty, is an entertaining parody of the well-known biblical story of Noah's Ark. Another theme that both films share in common, is Morgan Freeman's role as God incarnate.
Saturday Night...
read full review »Steve Carell, is a newly elected congressman from Buffalo who is commanded by God (Morgan Freeman) to build an ark.
That's the premise. The execution is fairly predictable and very wholesome, safe and nice-- too nice perhaps, but I expected this too be a little sappy and corny. It is.
It is also light and amusing with some nice supporting work from Wanda Sykes, John Goodman and others. There's four or five pretty big laughs in the movie, several chuckles and enough warmth to power a small city. Yes it's too bland to call a great movie... I give it 3 and a half stars raised up to 4.
Evan is an obsessive groomer and neat-freak with a wife, Joan (of Ark, get it?) played by Lauren Graham, and three sons. He dislikes animals and wants badly to impress his more senior colleagues, particularly Congressman Long (John Goodman, who played Huey Long, coincidentally or not), who got him a sweet Hill office. The Congressman is sponsoring a bill he wants Evan to sign onto.
Meanwhile his wife...

Evan Almighty was, as expected a fun, family show. My husband didn't go with me, because he views himself as maybe more conservative about religion than I, and he thought any comedy about God would be sacriligious. The really interesting thing was, although it was not touted as being "religious", nevertheless, it spoke volumes about faith, prayer, importance of family, and relying on God to never let you down.
NOW.....it was also fun, funny, delightful, and to our human minds, improbable. But it was the kind of movie you wish every misfit, gang-related, hormonal teenage would watch with...
read full review »Evan Almighty is mighty sad if you are expecting a good sequel to Bruce Almighty. Evan is not mighty at all. He is a lackey for Morgan Freeman, who is not nearly as funny in this movie as he was in Bruce Almighty. Bruce Almighty had many jokes. Funny jokes. Evan Almighty has no real jokes and no cleverness to the plot. The movie only gets laughs by having birds poop on John Goodman.
This movie is not at all funny. Just sad.
