Evan Almighty Review Summary

Evan Almighty is "as different from Bruce Almighty as Jim Carry and Steve Carrell." While Carrell seems to play the same guy in all his movies, as well as the television hit The Office, the character plays well here. As a modern-day Noah, the story of the Ark "has never been so funny." Evan Almighty also features "nice supporting work" from Wanda Sakes and John Goodman. Morgan Freeman makes the best "God" since George Burns. A "fun family film," Evan Almighty revolves around faith, prayer, and the importance of family, without being preachy. If you're looking for a sequel to Bruce Almighty, you won't find it, but if you're looking for a film the whole family can enjoy, while having a few laughs, you will.

Alot of my friends have been saying "Oh, Steve Carell is the same guy in every movie, blah blah blah." I personally don't believe that, but even if it were true, it works for him. It works extremely well. This movie is as good as it can be for the movie that it is. Does that make sense?

Similar in theme to the hit comedy starring Jim Carrey, Bruce Almighty, the recently released family comedy, Evan Almighty, is an entertaining parody of the well-known biblical story of Noah's Ark. Another theme that both films share in common, is Morgan Freeman's role as God incarnate.

Perhaps those that are disappointed with Evan Almighty are going in with certain expectations. Knowing that this movie was supposed to be a semi-sequel to Bruce Almighty, many are expecting this movie to match the original. That's not what we get here, but that's not such a bad thing. Thinking about it, the actors in the starring roles of the two films, Jim Carrey and Steve Carrell, are just as different as the two movies. While Carey seems to rely on more slapstick humor, Carrell's humor seems to be more self-deprecating.

Carrell stars as Evan Baxter, a former news anchor who wins election as a...

Steve Carell, is a newly elected congressman from Buffalo  who is commanded by God (Morgan Freeman) to build an ark.

That's the premise.  The execution is fairly predictable and very wholesome, safe and nice-- too nice perhaps, but I expected this too be a little sappy and corny.  It is.

It is also light and amusing with some nice supporting work from Wanda Sykes, John Goodman and others.   There's four or five pretty big laughs in the movie, several chuckles and enough warmth to power a small city.  Yes it's too bland to call a great movie... I give it 3 and a half stars  raised up to 4.

I enjoyed this movie much more than I thought I would!  I did not care for Bruce Almighty very much (as I felt there was inappropriate material for a movie that was supposed to have a "religious" spin to it), but Evan Almighty was not much like a sequel -- other than the fact that it had the Morgan Freeman character (who plays God).  This movie was much more family friendly.  The humor was not inappropriate for children (for the most part), and the fact that it has lots of animals in it makes it fun for children too!  I really enjoyed watching the family in this film interact with each other... review »

First let me start off by saying that I absolutely loved Bruce Almighty!! I cant even tell you how many times ive watched that movie & each & every time it gets me rollin!! So when I saw Evan Almighty in the video store I was so excited especially because Steve Carrel was the main character & I love him & think he is just hilarious. However, not more the 15 - 20 minutes into the movie did I already start to feel dissappointed. I really just thought it was pretty bad. Not really very funny at all.

I like everyone else that saw Bruce Almighty awaited this "Sequel" to arrive and when it did I like many others expected to see the same off color humor that follows Jim Carrey. Now I enjoy his humor and have liked every movie he has done, but the so called "Sequel" Evan Almighty was far from off color or racy! In fact is was a movie the whole family could enjoy and take lessons from.

The only real connection between the two were Evan Baxter(Steve Carell) as the newscaster who beat out his rival Bruce Nolan (Jim Carrey) and Morgan Freeman's return as the "Almighty" Evan has now run for congress...

In Bruce Almighty (2003) – you may remember – God (Morgan Freeman) granted unlimited power (within limits) to mortal TV weatherman Bruce Nolan (Jim Carrey) to teach him to take responsibility for his life and stop complaining so much. In Evan Almighty, God comes to Nolan’s former rival Evan Baxter (Steve Carell, who along with Freeman and director Tom Shadyac are the lone repeaters in the sequel), who has just been elected a Congressman, and tells him He wants him to build an ark.

You probably got all that, and much more, from the movie’s trailer, which has been seen just about everywhere...

The sequel to Bruce Almighty picks up with Evan (Steve Carell), the man who got the anchor job Bruce had coveted, being elected to Congress and moving his family to a Virginia suburb of Washington, D.C.

Evan is an obsessive groomer and neat-freak with a wife, Joan (of Ark, get it?) played by Lauren Graham, and three sons. He dislikes animals and wants badly to impress his more senior colleagues, particularly Congressman Long (John Goodman, who played Huey Long, coincidentally or not), who got him a sweet Hill office. The Congressman is sponsoring a bill he wants Evan to sign onto.

Meanwhile his wife...

This movie has given me a great and special memory. That day my son(Johnny age8) and daughter(Amber age 3). I took them to see a free children's movie for the summer free children's festival. The movie was okay. My son saw then a poster for Evan Almighty and cried we must see the movie. I thought that sounded good. I had remember how funny the commercial where. So we got a large popcorn, 3 sodas and had the theater almost to ourselves. it was about 11:00am so not many people where at the movies. And it was a weekday. We had a blast the kids jumped up and down laughed thier heads off. Spilled popcorn... review »

Evan Almighty was, as expected a fun, family show.   My husband didn't go with me, because he views himself as maybe more conservative about religion than I, and he thought any comedy about God would be sacriligious.   The really interesting thing was, although it was not touted as being "religious", nevertheless, it spoke volumes about faith, prayer, importance of family, and relying on God to never let you down.

NOW.....it was also fun, funny, delightful, and to our human minds, improbable.  But it was the kind of movie you wish every misfit, gang-related, hormonal teenage would watch with...

Evan Almighty is mighty sad if you are expecting a good sequel to Bruce Almighty. Evan is not mighty at all. He is a lackey for Morgan Freeman, who is not nearly as funny in this movie as he was in Bruce Almighty. Bruce Almighty had many jokes. Funny jokes. Evan Almighty has no real jokes and no cleverness to the plot. The movie only gets laughs by having birds poop on John Goodman.

This movie is not at all funny. Just sad.

I enjoyed Evan Almighty because of its good, wholesome message. They couldn't have casted a better Noah; Steve Carrell was brilliant. While watching the movie, I just kept thinking that the ark looked so real. After watching the extras, I learned that they actually constructed it. How amazing that must have been to have been there to see such a huge structure. I don't mean to give the movie away, but my favorite part of the whole movie was at the end when Morgan Freeman (GOD) tie the whole movie together with ARK: Acts of Random Kindness. The movie had many messages about family, trust... review »

Although Evan Almighty can not be considered as one of this year's best movies, no, not by a long shot, but it still wasn't half as bad as I thought it would be.  Even though most of the time you pretty much knew exactly what was coming next, you still found yourself chuckling even when it did happen.
