Eureka Vacuum - Eureka Whirlwind Lite - 4388 —

After years of putting personal convenience aside, I bought a bagless vacuum.  I'd had use of three; a pre-1970 Kirby, a Rainbow from probably same era, and an old Hoover glide from the 50's.  I liked the Rainbow the most due to the level of dust I get from dry unpaved mountain roads, but it was accidentally damaged.

I chose the Eureka Whirlwind because I'd had good luck with Eureka and heard good reports of quality for the price.  I am all about quality for a low price.  I've had my vacuum for about five years.

The filters get dirty and are expensive to replace, but I found that cutting and folding heat vent filters works quite well and at about a dozen for a few dollars they last inevitably.  The belt for the rug brush has only needed replaced once which is a miracle with animals, children, and a million projects leaving invisible terrors like thread around.

Because of the type of fine heavy dust, I do find myself washing out the collection pan frequently and beating the filters free of dust with each  use.  I started doing this when I noticed the dust looking like smoke in the handy light.  Speaking of the "handy" light, I believe I've prevented endless abuse with it to spotlight many culprits known to be hazardous to vacuums.

I don't use the utilities too often.  The hard plastic makes a tight seal difficult and dust tends to leak out.  They tend to be a little confusing to assemble unless or until more frequent use.  I noticed that Eureka, like many newer vacuums, doesn't have the attachments to use on walls & upholstery or the ability to adjust the air flow for their use.  I'd probably use them with each general cleaning, if it included these tools.

The suction on the Eureka Whirlwind is great for both floors and extensions, which is a plus with many moderate priced uprights. I need a powerful vacuum.  For most of my needs, it does well for everything but stairs.

Natually, on a strict budget, I wish the price were less, but I believe it compares with other similar styles of different brands.  It could pick up animal hair better but that would require a stronger motor and they do of course cost more.

All totalled, I would grade the Whirlwind B+ and recommend it for those people who don't have a large budget or house.
