Eric Carle's "The Very Clumsy Click Beetle" details the adventures of a young click beetle that is down on his luck and stuck on his back. A wise old click beetle comes along to teach this greenhorn how to right himself.

The clumsy click beetle immediately feels ready for the challenge and prepares to click his way back to his feet, but his efforts leave him on his back. Various animals happen by, and each time the click beetle says "Look at me" as he tries to right himself. Those animal friends each praise his efforts and encourage him to keep trying.

Finally a person comes along and scares the poor click beetle as the wise beetle cries for him to click. This time he manages to click his way back to his feet to the praise of the wise old click beetle.

The really cool thing about this book is that it has an imbedded "clicker" that actually clicks as the clumsy beetle finally somersaults back to his feet.

My kids love this book and have requested that we check it out at the library numerous times. The story flows nicely with no more than a short paragraph on each page, so it keeps the attention of young children who are ready for short picture books. The pictures are lively and colorful, but probably the biggest attraction for this book is the clicking noise. Unfortunately, somewhere along the way this library book lost its clicking ability, but my kids still like the story.

My kids can certainly relate to the "Look at me!" as the click beetle tries over and over to meet his goal. Perhaps there is also a subtle lesson for parents here in that the wise click beetle observed, encouraged, but did not step in and flip the little beetle over. At times I struggle with that as a parent.

Eric Carle has a series of books similar to this including:
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
The Very Busy Spider
The Very Quiet Cricket
The Very Lonely Firefly

My Viewpoint:

This is a great picture book for young children that encourages perseverence and practice in learning new skills.

Thanks! My kids certainly have enjoyed reading it. It has thick pages, which is nice. I just think this copy at the library must have been checked out by someone who likes to "tinker" with things--trying to figure out how it works and broke the clicker. With regular use, I think it will click as long as you'd like! Hope she will enjoy it.

Copywrite is 1999. We could bring it over and let him read it if you'd like!

I forgot to even mention the thick pages, but you're right. Glad your little ones like it!

Thanks for checking on that. I'm thinking that NC does have something called a Young Writers program through UNC. Maybe it's at the local schools...I'll have to check. That's great that your son was able to do something so special.

Excellent review. I think I might get this for my daughter (to read to her daughter). Thanks.

I wonder if this one is newer? We missed it and I know the tall kid would have loved it.

I've got little counterparts at home so anything Eric Carle gets PLENTY of read-time (good thing they use those thick cardboard pages!!)

Hi Katrena! I called the school, unfortunately the Eric Carle Program is a school district program. You may want to pass it on to your own school district. The kids read, then wrote and illustrated their own books. Our district has it as a two week summer program.

That sounds really cool. That would be great to find out if it's nationwide or local. My oldest daughter loves to create things and loves to read. She might be interested in something like that. She's just getting ready to start first grade.

He was almost 8 when he was in the program. He is now almost 10. It wasn't last summer but the one before. He was entering 2nd grade then. I don't know if this is a nationwide program or if it's just one through our school district. If you want, I can call the school and find out for you. It really was a great 2 week summer program. They wrote their own books.

How wonderful! How old is your son, if you don't mind me asking. I haven't heard of the writing program.

My son has all the Eric Carle books. He is his favorite author. Last year he was accepted into the Eric Carle writing program at his school. He loved it.
