I had an Ergo for awhile and it is a decent carrier. I think the big issue is what you are used to using prior to using an Ergo, if you've used other carriers, including wraps, Mei Tais, Buckle Tais, etc you might find it lacking. Those who are a bit intimidated by carriers sometimes find it a nice step into the world of better babywearing carriers.
I'd definitely put Ergo into the category of good carriers, unlike Snugglies, Baby Bjorns and Baby Trekkers who hold the baby in anatomically incorrect positions and put too much force on the hips. The fact that this carrier is widely known and carried in many stores is a definite perk as it breaks a really good carrier to a much wider audience than many other carriers.
My issues with the Ergo are that it has an extrememly short body, which is why it can't be used for infants without the insert. other carriers in a similar style have a long enough body to allow a new born to scrunch up froggie style against you and be snug in the carrier. Also, the biggest issue is the chest clip, for back carries it is easy to put the baby on your back, pull on the straps and then clip the chest clip. However, for front carries, you have to put the shoulder straps on, then reach behind your neck and do up and adjust the chest clip. I found this very difficult and cumbersome. The straps are not long enough to cross at the back (something those used to Mei Tais, wraps, etc might automatically expect from a carrier! And something very useful!) and the buckle is a the wrong end of the webbing to allow for easy adjustability of the shoulder straps while in use.
It is definitel comfortable to wear though!
