Oh Ergo Baby, how do I love thee, let me count the ways. I am not quite sure what I would do without the Ergo baby carrier. It calms a crying baby, it is great for walks outside in the rain with an umbrella (no bulky wet stroller), it is gentle on my back, fits both mommy and daddy, super durable, practical, safe, and just all around praise-worthy!
I want to emphasize that waiting until baby is old enough is not necessary with this carrier, it is great with a new born and promotes the bond and closeness of parent and child. She is so happy when she is snuggled there, and at this age (2.5 mo) she pretty much falls asleep in five minutes even if I put her in there when she is wide awake. The infant insert is so handy, I use it sometimes to just lull her to sleep, that way she does not wake up when I put her down. It also keeps her from waking up when transferring from carrier to crib. Snuggly warm in the winter too.
With warm weather finally on the horizon I am excited to take her on trail hikes with daddy without having to buy an all-terrain stroller. As with any baby carrier, keep in mind though that if your baby's diaper happens to leak, it will likely be on you too, so keep a change of clothes handy for youself also!
I am eager to try the front, back, and side carry as she gets a little older. My only complaint is that it seems a little bit long for my very short torso (I am 5'2"), so the hip belt ends up very low on my hips, nearly on my thighs. Nevertheless, I find it comfortable and I can move around and sit down fine with her in the front. Fits great on my 6'2" husband!
