I had my gallbladder removed the hard way last month and wound up with a 10 inch slice across my abdomen.  Aside from being horrified by the huge wound, I also had to regularly change the dressings and try to keep it clean and free of infection.  One of the products I used to care for the incision was *Equate Triple Antibiotic Ointment*.

*Equate Triple Antibiotic Ointment* is designed to prevent infection in cuts, scrapes, and burns.  The three antibiotic components are bacitracin, neomycin, and polymyxin.  The directions for use state that you should clean the affected area, apply some of this ointment 1-3 times daily, and then cover it if necessary with a sterile bandage.

I have a huge incision and my husband bought a 1 ounce tube of this *Triple Antibiotic Ointment* at Walmart.  I diligently squeezed it along my giant slice after every shower and then covered it up with a huge sterile bandage.  I freaked out a few times when the bandage had green gunk on it, but the surgeon examined me and assured me that it was better to have that nasty stuff coming out instead of festering inside.  In other words, the green gunk was drainage and not any sign of infection.  I used up the whole tube of this *Equate Triple Antibiotic Ointment* (after using a tube of [Target Antibiotic Cream][1] ) before seeing the surgeon to have the staples removed.  He was very pleased with the healing of the incision and told me not to keep it dressed any longer which was the end of using this ointment.

I'm not the kind of person who gets all banged and scraped up, so we don't normally keep antibiotic ointment on hand at all times.  Still, I have no complaints about *Equate Triple Antibiotic Ointment* and would definitely buy it again in the future if I had a serious scrape or slice.  It kept my incision free of infection and on the way to healthy healing.  Recommended!

I used to purchase Equate Triple Antibiotic Ointment all the time.  It was much cheaper than Neosporin and seemed to work just as well.  However, I found Watkins Petro-Carbo Salve about 4 or 5 years ago and realized it is the best at soothing and healing.  I often use this Salve to heal my kids diaper rash.  I simply put the Watkins Petro-Carbo Salve onto my boys' bottoms, with a top layer of Bag Balm.  By the next morning, the diaper rash is almost always gone.  I do not skimp on the amount that I put on cuts or rashes, and this salve has lasted through my twins (who are almost 4) and my 15 month old.  We use the Watkins Petro-Carbo Salve on cuts all of the time (and always cover with a bandaid as this can be messy).  We have almost completely quit using Neosporin or the Triple Antibiotic Ointment.  I much prefer the Watkins Petro-Carbo Salve over Neosporin or Equate Triple Antibiotic Ointment.

Good for the Money

By

from Utah

Comments about Equate Triple Antibiotic Ointment:

This antibiotic ointment is much cheaper than the name brand alternatives, but it seems to work just as well as they do. Combining its lower cost with its effectiveness, it offers the most bang for its buck, making it well worth the money that is spent on it. It is usually my first choice when looking for this type of product.

Effectiveness
This antibiotic ointment seems to work as well as the name brand alternatives. Any time I have used this one it has helped prevent an infection or slow down and remove any infection that was beginning before I started to use it.

Ease of Application
Squeezing out of the tube and rubbing into the cut or affected area is very simple. The tube can be a bit tricky to finish off and get the last little bit out, but that is common with this type of tube, and this one works about as well as any other one.

Side Effects
I have used this medication several times personally, and I have never experienced negative side effects in any way from it.

Better

Comments about Equate Triple Antibiotic Ointment:

This stuff is great. I would recommend it over neosporin or any other brand any day. It's quite a bit less expensive and works just as well. All it takes is a little bit so one tube lasts for a while depending on how often you need it. I will use this product even if I get a kitty scratch because it helps to relieve my pain that comes with minor cuts and scrapes and scratches. I also know it keeps me safe from infection and bacteria. I will use this product even on my babies knowing I am keeping them safe.

Side Effects
None. It helps me heal faster and relieve my pain.

Equate Triple Antibiotic Ointment--my panacea for cuts/scraps

By

from Piedmont, NC

Comments about Equate Triple Antibiotic Ointment:

If a kiss and a hug can't fix a boo-boo at my house, I will usually pull out the Equate triple antibiotic ointment. This is similar to name brand antibiotic ointments, such as Neosporin, but at a fraction of the cost and is one of the most helpful items in my first aid kit.

**This triple antibiotic ointment contains:**

- bacitracin

- neomycin sulfate

- polymyxin B sulfate

**How to Use this product:**

- Clean the affected area.

- Apply enough ointment to cover the broken skin.

- Cover with a bandage if preferred.

- Avoid use of this product if you are allergic to any of the active or inactive ingredients.

- It is recommended to check with a physician before using this product if you have a deep puncture wound, animal bite, or serious burn.

What I like about Equate Triple Antibiotic Ointment:

- It can heal minor cuts and scraps in a short period of time. (If it is not healed within a week, I would recommend contacting a doctor. I usually don't have to apply this ointment for more than two to three days.)

- Great for those on a budget because the cost is much lower than the name brand products.

- Easy to find at Wal-Mart in the pharmacy section.

- Over-the-Counter.

- Convenient tube.

- Clear--doesn't stain clothing.

- Does not tend to burn when applied. I have three children, and they tend to dread it if I need to treat any cut. If they close their eyes, they often do not realize that I have even applied the product. Sometimes it is helpful to apply the ointment to the white part of a bandage and then place the bandage on the affect area.

- It tends to lesson the pain and signs of infection (redness, tenderness, swelling) in the area within a short period of time--often less than an hour.

As with any medication, I would recommend that you check with your healthcare provider before using and to use this as the product labeling suggests. Overuse of any antibiotic can cause problems, including resistant bacteria, so it is wise to use only when needed. This review is not intended to be medical advice.

**My Viewpoint:**

**Equate Triple Antibiotic Ointment** is economical, easy to find, and works well and quickly for minor cuts and scraps. It can prevent infection and aid in the healing process when used appropriately. I have found this item to be very useful in my first aid kit.

Equate Triple Antibiotic is just as good as neosporin

By

from Appleton, WI

Comments about Equate Triple Antibiotic Ointment:

I have a large family and we only have one income so we try to economize whenever possible and buy a lot of generic products. The Equate Triple Antibiotic Ointment is the generic equivalent of neosporin. When my oldest was very young and learning to walk he got a small cut on his face. I was extremely worried about scarring and asked the doctor what to use. He told me to use neosporin and the cut healed nicely and there was no infection. A few years later another son had a cut that required stitched and again I was concerned about scarring and his doctor told me that any generic antibiotic ointment would work just as well. The equate triple antibiotic that I used did appear to work just as well.

The tube is a bit more difficult to handle than the name brand neosporin and the end isn't as tapered to give you a nice control on how much you squeeze out. These are small trade offs though for the cost savings.

Okay but not as good as Neosporin

By

from Arlington, TX

Comments about Equate Triple Antibiotic Ointment:

I am sure that the antibiotic properties of this product are okay.  I usually purchase the pain releaving kind and I do not feel that it works as well as Neosporin.  Perhaps Neosporin has more pain medicine in it but this one does not do the job as well.

Works on any hurt. Minor hurts, of course.

Comments about Equate Triple Antibiotic Ointment:

From papercuts to scrapes, you need to protect from infection. The best way to do that is to wash it up and put some antibiotic ointment on it. Equate Antibiotic Ointment is great for protecting any minor injuries. It gets rid of infectious agents and also relieves pain. Since the brand is Equate, you know you are getting a good product for a low cost. Who cares if it's generic? It works, palin and simple. If you have a serious wound or injury, for goodness' sake, do not try to fix it with a little antibiotic ointment, go get some help! This product is a tad bit messy, but if you use it moderately, you shouldn't have any problems. You can find this product in pretty much any drugstore, grocery store, Walmart....the list goes on. The point is that it's easy to find. I would definietly recommend putting some antibiotic ointment on all of your minor injuries, not only because it helps fight infection, but also because your wound will heal so much faster.

Cheap and effective

Comments about Equate Triple Antibiotic Ointment:

I have a habit of burning myself on the woodstove, kitchen ovens, you name it. This stuff is awesome, none of my burns have ever been infected when I used it and it lasts for a long time. And it's cheaper than other brands.

Not only does it heal, but it also takes the pain away.

By

from Leitchfield, KY

Comments about Equate Triple Antibiotic Ointment:

Even though this is the generic brand of neosporin, it works just the same. I love this stuff. I put it on, with or without a band-aid, on my fingertips (where I bite my nails to the skin...OUCH) and it heals so fast. It even seems to take away the pain after only a few minutes.
