Equate Extra Strength Anti Itch Cream —

After such a wet spring in the Midwest this year I should have known the mosquito population would be booming in Indiana. After camping out for 4 days I was pretty much itching from head to toe, even using mosquito spray! Since we camped not 100 yards from the river I should have had a better repellent than what I did and now I am paying for it. A trip to Walmart gave me back a little sanity and stopped the itching to a point I could tolerate.

Equate Extra Strength Anti-Itch Cream

Equate's Extra Strength Anti Itch Cream is comparable to the Extra Strength Benedryl Cream but at 1/2 the price. SO I grabbed me a tube and never waited to get out of the store, nope I headed for the restroom to put some on right away!

This cream goes on easy and has a slight cooling effect as you apply it and within minutes my itch went from a roar to a whisper and I couldn't have been happier either. I don't get small bumps when I get bit I get quarter sized knots that itch like crazy every time I get bit by either a mosquito or a chigger. Unfortunately for me once I was done camping with my oldest daughter I came to my younger daughters and she has chiggers bad!

I have about 20 bites on me right now between mosquitoes and chiggers but this cream is helping a lot with the itching. I only have one that got infected and have had to treat it but considering how many bites I have and how I react to them, I am doing pretty good.

This is a rather thick cream but I like it that way because it doesn't rub off as easily when my clothing rubs against it. It kind of reminds me a little like a diaper rash cream but not quite as thick.

Ingredients

The active ingredients are as follows:
Diphenhydramine hypochloride 2% --Topical analgesic
Zinc acetate0.1% -- Skin protectant

Uses

According to the package this cream will treat the following:

Insect Bites, Minor Burns, Sunburn, Minor Skin Irritations, Minor Cuts, Scrapes and rashes due to Poison Ivy, Poison Oak and Poison Sumac. It also is supposed to dry up the oozing caused by Poison Ivy, Poison Sumac and Poison Oak.

Warnings

It is of course for External Use Only

Do Not Use on children under 2 unless you consult your Doctor and do not use more than 3 or 4 times daily. Also do not use on Measles or Chicken Pox without your Doctors Approval!

Do not use on large areas of the body and do not use if you are using any product containing Diphenhydramine (including oral medications)

Some products I found that contain Diphenhydramine are Benedryl, Nytol, Unisom, Tylenol PM, Sominex, Tylenol Simply Sleep........any other antihistamine or sleep aid may also contain it so read labels and be safe!

Bottom Line

This Equate Extra Strength Anti Itch Cream really saved me from going nuts this past week and without it I would be totally miserable. I really can't wait to get back home where I have no chiggers and may get 1 mosquito bite a week! I really have to take my hat off to Equate for having a product that works so well! I still have a slight itch but it is tolerable so I will give this a 4 star rating.

Yep I did one on Cutter and it did have that Picaridin in it....didn't work for me...;(

Love the title on this review! I use equate products pretty often too and find them to be comparable in most cases for a lot less money as well. I'm thinking you did a review on cutter mosquito repellent. If you're out and about with little ones and don't want to use something with DEET, you may want to try another Cutter product without the DEET--here's the link to a review I did on it: http://www.viewpoints.com/Cutter-Advanced-Sport-Insect-Repellent-with-Picaridin-Heavy-Duty-Formula-review-ddd63

I like when a generic or store brand works like that. Saves a ton of money! Good to know this is effective. Thanks for the info!

Yes they can, then add chiggers on top and you have one miserable time....;(

AnnaBanana wrote on Aug 25, 2008 at 10:10AM

I'm sorry you had to suffer through this, Ron -- itching is no laughing matter, especially those awful chiggers. I hope you find some better repellent the next time you camp as sometimes people can catch things from bites, etc.

Man those skeeters can make life miserable. ;>
