     To begin, it might be helpful to know my situation and what experience I have had with infant formula.  At the present, I am a new mother of a sweet little boy who is 12 weeks old.  I do not work outside the home and had originally intended to solely feed my son breast milk provided that I had enough.  Thus, I had no intention of purchasing or even looking into formula.  Unfortunately, the use of formula has become a necessity.  Fortunately though, a survey company had asked that I sign up with three formula companies via their websites in order to complete a series of paid questionnaires.  I was asked to register with Similac, Enfamil, and Nestle's Very Best Baby.  So, if you count all the samples I received from enrolling with these companies as well as from various health care professionals, I attained:

  • Similac (regular powder in the blue canister), which we used;
  • Similac Soy (powder in the red canister), which did not mix as well, so we stopped using;
  • Enfamil Lipil (powder in the yellow canister), which we used;
  • Enfamil Lipil (powder single-serve packets), which we used in our diaper bag; and
  • Enfamil Lipil (liquid ready-to-use Nursettes), which we also used in our diaper bag.

     After using the samples, I purchased regular Similac powder and Enfamil Lipil powder because the companies had sent me vouchers and I had already used samples, so I knew what to expect.  However, my son became fussier and I could hear gas moving through his system causing him pain, so I decided to try Enfamil Gentlease.

     I noticed right away that Enfamil Gentlease was different.  The powder is not as fine as the regular Enfamil Lipil.  Also, when you mix it with water and shake it, it produces fewer bubbles than regular Enfamil Lipil and regular Similac powders.  I really like the fact that it makes fewer bubbles in the bottle because it is easier to see how much my son has eaten, how much is left, and whether he has finished the bottle or not.  It is also nice to know that my son is not sucking down foam that would put more air in his tummy.

     As far as decreasing the gas and fussiness, I am not sure if the product worked.  It is true that my son has had fewer problems with fussiness and gas causing him lengthy bouts of pain.  However, there have been times when we have used regular Enfamil Lipil (in various forms) since starting the Gentlease, and the results have been the same as when we only used the Gentlease.  Therefore, I do not know if the product worked, my son just grew out of the painful gas, or both.

     To sum up, I have used various formulas.  The Enfamil Gentlease is different from regular Enfamil Lipil powder in texture and produces fewer bubbles than either Enfamil Lipil or regular Similac powders.  I am not sure if the Gentlease itself caused my son's relief from gas pain or if he just grew out of it since he seems to do alright with regular Enfamil Lipil now.  However, for the mere fact that Gentlease makes fewer bubbles and thus makes the contents of the bottle easier to see and read, I prefer it to the other powder formulas that I have tried.
