I grew up with classic Walt Disney movies and used to spend Saturdays at the matinee watching Disney movies one after the other. That was years ago when it was safe to drop your children off and let them enjoy a movie or two with a couple of friends.  It was like having the theater to yourself, with a room of mostly teenagers and pre-teens all munching down on popcorn, candy and cokes.  Those were the good old days, indeed!  As the years progressed, Disney movies started to short-change my kid's generation and the movies were just so-so.  Since Disney has merged with Pixel, the movies seem to be a much higher quality and also much more interesting for all ages.  This was the case with Enchanted.  I found it to be delightful.

The Plot

Enchanted
starts out as a classic Disney fairytale about a prince (Edward) searching for his princess.  He finds her and they plan to marry.  However, the mean and wicked Queen Narissa (the prince's step-mother), wants no part of the marriage and feels nothing but jealousy toward the princess (Giselle).  She is afraid she will lose her crown to her so she pushes Giselle down a sewer.  When Giselle pops up through the sewer cover she finds herself in a different world.  She is in America, New York City to be exact!  She is distraught because she doesn't know anyone and has no idea where to go. She bumps into a kind attorney named Robert (Patrick Dempsey) who tries to put her in a taxi cab and send her on her way, but Giselle doesn't know how to tell the drive to take her back to Andalasia.

So Robert feels sorry for her (with his daughter's persuasion) and they bring her home with them.  The adventure begins here because Giselle is always up to something unexpected.  She is an accomplished housekeeper with the help of wild birds and rats which she summons by singing.  This freaks out Robert but fascinates his daughter.  Giselle is also a fine seamstress.  She make a new dress from the draperies, without asking of course.

As the days go by, Giselle learns more about civilized life in New York.  However, she never gives up hope that her prince will return for her.  Yet, when he does this fairytale takes a twist.

My Thoughts On Enchanted

I thought this movie was very entertaining and kept the viewer interested with the animated beginning and lots of clever writing.  The addition of the pigeons and rats helping Giselle clean was classic Disney creativity in my opinion.  You couldn't help but smile and like the little creatures as they did their "chores".

Julie Andrews was the narrator for the movie and a very good choice.  Her voice is perfect for expressions that kept the movie on the upbeat and the viewer wanting more excitement.

I loved the casting of Patrick Dempsey as Robert, the New York attorney, who specialized in divorces.  It was nice to see him in a role without a white coat.  I found he was very charming and fit the role nicely.  He portrayed a caring father with a great personality.

Amy Adams as Giselle was also a delight.  She was fresh and enthusiastic and did a great job of playing a clueless damsel in distress.

Rachel Covey played Robert's daughter, Morgan.  She was very impressive in this film and did a great job.  She is cute and very adorable.  I am betting that she will be a child actress to keep your eyes on in the future with some other great roles in the making.

My husband was a bit disappointed to find that this wasn't an animated film throughout the movie but he did end up enjoying the movie regardless.

Other Movie Facts

Enchanted
is rated PG but I really don't see why any partent would have an objection to their child of any age seeing this film.  there are a few scary scenes but that is about all I can remember that may be scary for some small children.   It runs for 107 minutes of pure entertainment.

Enchanted won The Critics Choice Award (2008) for Best Family Film and was nominated for many other awards in multiple categories.

Recommendation

I highly recommend Enchanted for a great family movie.  It will capture your imagination and also your emotions.  This is a wonderfully entertaining movie that will remind you of the Disney movies of the past.

It was quite entertaining just saw it this week while in orlando, thought it was a big scary for the toddlers, but it didn't seem to bother them.

The scene where she's strolling through Central Park, singing, dancing and picking up a following along the way just totally cracks me up...

Hi Jazzy, I've been seeing commercials on network TV stations. You should really put this one on your list. It's already on DVD too :)

I've heard so many things about this movie. All from Viewpoints since I've never seen a preview for this. It's sounds like a wonderful movie though and I can't wait to see it. Nicely done review.
