Rain pounded the pavement, tornadoes were being reported near home, so I turned to my husband and said, "Since there's no point in trying to leave town, and the safest place would be in a windowless room, how 'bout we go to the dollar movie and see what all the fuss was about this Enchanted movie." We had not intended to see this silliest of silly movies, but wondering why the three songs were nominated for the Oscar (didn't win), and having no other option at the moment, why not? Besides, my husband, at age 70, only wants to watch movies with no value other than to escape. He has watched all of my chick flicks, and has even been taking me to see teen movies. This one should be perfect.

What we found was a perfectly charming movie. It was funny, too!
When I saw the cartoon portion, I thought, "Oh, no. They have redrawn Ariel and the Cinderella woodsy animals look silly. The step-mother changing into the ancient, old witch? . . Oh, please." However, I really enjoyed the terrible blue dragon. Didn't scare the begeebers out of me like the old one in Sleeping Beauty, it kinda reminded me of the Spider-Dr Smith in Lost in Space, but I liked it even with the Corny King Kong reference at the end. . . . but who got to clean up the mess when it went SPLAT on the pavement? I'll always wonder.

Once the action moved to real people in NYC, and the princess changed from squeaky 2-dimensional to down right sophisticated young woman, I was intrigued. The best character change was the knave as he transformed through keeping the prince in the dark by having him capture trolls, following through on the job of poisoning the "human" princess, to finally finding his own truth and becoming a man.

So this movie will never make the Top Ten Movies to Change the World.
It many never reach "classic" status of the Disney Princess Movies.
However, for a couple of hours, it was a lovely way to escape from the lightening, hail, wind and torrential rain of the outside world. It made me feel good.

Will I watch it again? Yes. I doesn't come near touching the Cinderella story of Ever After, but it will be something to use with a younger audience or by myself on a stormy afternoon when I need some silliness to scare away the darkness.
