Enchanted —

Okay, Enchanted- you are going to read a review that you will probably not read anywhere else. You might find that I don't usually approach things in a way that many others do- which constantly cracks my parents and family up. Must be the artist in me.

ENCHANTED. The story starts out with a watered down cartoon version of a princess and prince story which is like a blenderized version of many of the old-time Disney fairy tales. I say watered down, because when you compare the detail and artistic value of the old time Disney cartoons, this is just- well a lite version- hence the term *watered down*.

The princess played by Amy Adams I think it is, ends up dropping to earth via sewer I think it was, which has distinct echoes of JUST VISITING- a movie very similar from about 10 years ago or so. You know, the movie that starred the girl that has "Apple" in her last name......

Oh never mind...back to our story.

Okay, so this princess ends up in NYC in modern times and brings her Enchanted happy "Pollyanna" attitude with her, and gives many a viewer chuckles of delight and amusement as this happy-go-lucky girl colors the world around her with her homemade gowns from curtains and other sundry items (a fairy tale Martha Stewart...), and gets birds and animals to do her cleaning....

The story is like a melding of many of the dearly loved Disney movies like Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, etc.

Then of course, she meets up with McDreamy Pat Dempsy .....

*quick break* (who still boggles my mind on how he lost like over 100 pounds in 1 year to return to the screen for Sweet Home Alabama and Grey's Anatomy and has no stretch marks or appearances linking him to his former very large body shape... and where were his fans then----after all he was still the same person just in a large body......don't get me started...HAHA.)

*break over*

....where was I? Oh yes, so the romance starts and the movie is full of creative energy and funny spoofs on the old fairy tale concept.

This movie was creative, funny, and family friendly- but I was very curious to see my entire family's reactions to the movie.

My young daughter was enamoured with the princess in the story and the romance sent her into giggles.

My husband and son were both disillusioned with the ending, which totally surprised me. They both almost in unison said that they were upset that the jist of the movie seemed to be that the princess who used to be so good and positive and full of love had to become jaded and dull at the end to fit in this world....

Wow, guys actually DO think of things like that....

And me..........well, I could not get past that disgusting dress they stuck on her for the final costume ball scene.

I mean, COME ON! The girl was dressed to the hilt through the entire movie and I was just waiting for the finale to see what costuming they whipped up for her......only to be thrown down to earth with a resounding THUD.

For crying out loud- it looked like they ran out of costume budget money and all they had left was a Salvation Army dress they got from the "prom" section 10 years ago.

The color was drab, she looked horrible, and I just kept asking myself what in the world the costume and makeup department was thinking!  Or maybe they just gave up....

In fact, the only redeeming quality of the last 1/2 hour of the movie for me visually was the iridescent dragon costume which although a bit tacky in the way it was put together, (As a clothing and costume designer, I can say that- ;D), the lovely iridescent duochromatic visuals on the dragon left me wanting to see her the rest of the movie.

The makeup was even more interesting than dull tarnished princess who blended with the wall in the ladies room more than she fit in the costume ball. I really delighted in the gorgeous visuals of the dragon as the princess seemed to have left the buildilng so to speak.

At the end of the movie, our family must have been a vision to watch. Frowning men on each end of the row irritated at the lack of upbeat ending.......daughter giggling over the romance of the princess and McDreamy, and me calling out quietly, "Bring back the Dragon! I want to see the DRAGON!!!"

All in all, this is a family friendly movie, and despite the lack of prudence in the part of the costume and makeup staff in dealing with the princess, I still enjoyed it. It was funny, interesting, and kept the attention of eveyrone that was in the audience the day that we went to see it, and that is hard for movies to do of this caliber.

I finally saw this a week ago (on DVD) and I was slightly disappointed. It was "cute" but that was pretty much it. I'm so glad that I didn't see it in the movie theater.

I'm wondering why you gave it four stars if it is so average. Three sounds more like it. ?
