I bought the Elna machine over 10 years ago when it was state-of-the-art. I have used it to sew the most lightweight fabric as well as heavy denim and leather. I think it was designed for quilters but I do clothing alterations and use it for an all around machine. I am replacing my serger of about the same age because there have been so many improvements to sergers, but this machine is still current as far as the stitches available and its abilities. It still runs as good as the day I purchased it with minimum maintenance. If I were to buy a new straight-stitch machine today Elna is the first brand that I would look at. Elna is a quality company who puts out quality products, and they have been in business for many, many years. This machine comes with an easy buttonhole, several zig-zag stitches, an adjustable needle, as well as easy bobbin winding and loading. Presser feet are easy to switch out.
