It says a lot about the excitement level of my life right now that one of the highlights of my Valentine's Day was that someone's dog gave me a box of candy!  Roxie (who I occasionally feed and walk while her owners are away) was determined to get me nothing but the best, a group which apparently includes Elmer's Assorted Chocolates.  I am surprised that I have never tasted them before because it seems that the Elmer Candy Corporation has been pumping out fine chocolates in the New Orleans area since 1855.

The attractive personal-sized (2.4 oz.) heart-shaped box contained four beautifully made candies which are slightly smaller than Fannie May but just as tasty, loaded as they are with cocoa butter and other melt-in-your-mouth ingredients.  There were two either peach or orange-flavored creams, a soft but chewy caramel and a truffle loaded with luscious liquid caramel which all tasted like that wonderful chocolate candy cooked in copper pots in ice cream parlour kitchens in the old days.

STATS:

Some merciful person has designated this entire personal assortment of four pieces to be one serving which contains 300 calories with 100 calories from fat.  There are 11 grams total fat, five grams saturated fat, one and a half grams trans fat, less than 5 mg. cholesterol, 45 mg. sodium, 50 grams total carbs, less than one gram dietary fiber, 44 grams sugars, and two grams protein.  There are even 4% (D.V.) each Calcium and Iron!

TASTE TIP:

Elmer's Assorted Chocolates are not something we should be eating every day, I suppose, but you should try them at least once.  As is the case with all fine chocolate, make sure this candy is at room temperature or even just a shade warmer for best flavor and consistency.  For more information, visit ElmerCandy.com.

I agree, I would go down in a single day if I had to be a waitress. Here's another one -- AIRLINE ATTENDANT. Honestly, I don't know how they stand it!!!!!!!

Well, now Pal is cornered on the issue of tipping, but mainly because of the economy. The restaurants are often so empty, and the talented servers work so hard in order to please. Yes, I think it's a talent to be a good server.
I remember Western Springs, but I don't know why. It sounds like it's got really good vibes. Let me know all about it after you adventure there.

One of my reviews early on was about Trage Appliances in Forest Park. I was singing the praises of small family-run businesses and I warned that when these "little" places go out, we are all going to miss them very much. It's funny this came up because you know how I said I went out to Naperville to have lunch with my buddy? Well, to get to Route 69, (where she picks me up), I take the Burlington through a bunch of towns including RIVERSIDE!!!!!! A little farther out is a town called Western Springs which is the most fascinating place. When the weather gets a little better, I'm going to take the train and get off at Western Springs even though I don't know anybody there!

I don't know why but they still have a really nice "Main Street" area with small flourishing stores -- butcher, baker, hardware, even a "green grocer" (fruit and fresh veggies) store. My guess is that all this has survived because it is right near the train station. If I were a commuter, I would certainly be doing my shopping there instead of driving over to the Mall!

Well, take care -- I'm going to check my stats and continue decluttering!

Love ya!

P. S. I had to smile when I thought of TunefulPal and the tipping!! He was trying to watch out for me that time he said I tipped too much, I shouldn't have taken it personally. I love you guys.

Exactly! Although life isn't easy for us, I recognize how really awful it is for the unemployed (of course) and the minimum wage workers. Dick and I are actually tipping a little more when we do go out (which isn't nearly as often as it used to be). This is also a good time to patronize local merchants even if things cost a little more. Target's great, but there's nothing as friendly and helpful as Tritch Hardware here in Eagle Rock. (I need to take you there.) I think this is also just the time when Public Radio and PBS networks really need contributions to keep their heads above water. God forbid that something intelligent be smashed. They educate, inform, and entertain us all the time. Now, partly, it's our turn.

I read this message again and I understand it better and I totally agree. There's a big christening but nobody bothers to come to the funeral which is just as important! Sort of a "What have you done for us lately?" sen-off as though they have given up on the business before it even leaves. And no one is sympathetic either, even though the business may have done all it could and might not have been at fault for anything. I'm telling you, Cuz, with the economy going the way it is, I don't know what's going to happen. If too many things go down the tube, it's going to hit all of us very hard. I don't think people realize that, I think they just figure if a place goes out of business, that's THEIR problem but really if the bell tolls for them, it's going to affect us all!

Well, I'll tell you how this all ended. I go in there Friday afternoon and things were getting pretty hysterical because this older lady who pretty much managed the place for her daughter and I had really bonded and so there were hugs and good-byes, etc. I'm telling you, it was SAD. But what I want to mention is that a neighbor of theirs, Edible Arrangements, (I think they have been reviewed for V.P. by several people) sent over a beautiful bouquet of pieces of fresh fruit on stems. It was REALLY nice, I bet it cost more than $50, and for this last day Melaine (the woman's name) treated all of us who had been regular customers to free coffee and a pastry. I have some more things to mail now on Monday morning and I think when I go to the mailbox, I'm not even gooing to look over at the store where BBC was. It's just too sad. They really did their best of it and it was a nice place to sometimes just go and sit for a few minutes. Ah well.

Here's what bothers me. We have endless hoopla here everytime a business opens. When it has to close, no one says "good-bye" publically. It's as if the failed business means it's owner has to slink out of town. These are small businesses operated by people working their asses off to succeed in our horrible economy. I need to write an article, I guess, but I'm tired of doing good labor for nada. Need a little break. Hopefully my can-do attitude will return soon.

This place that went under is just a local little business that no one ever heard of except in this area -- the Burke Business Center. I would occasionally go over there and fax a document or something. I never had much business for them in their real line, which was to provide computer equipment and meeting rooms, etc., for small local businesses who maybe couldn't afford the office set-ups they needed. The economy sliding downhill hit the small local businesses, I suppose, and well it just rolled downhill from there to BBC. I will surely miss them though as they sold wonderful coffee (the equal of Starbucks) for only $2 for the biggest size and a variety of other things including lovely pastries and light lunches which were really very healthy and much more reasonable than S.B.. They even had store cards which you could load. If you loaded the card on Mondays, you got 10% off, which added up even if all you did was stop in or a coffee now and then. I didn't go every day but whenever I walked over to the counter to mail something, there BBC was right across the street and I would treat myself to a coffee or something. I got along with the lady who ran the shop beautifully. But, come Monday, when I walk over to mail something, there will just be another empty retail space sitting there, which is really depressing.

The candy box was for me, but when I was hungry for it, guess who was there? It was only proper for me to share (I guess). I think a lot about stores going out of business. Who failed now? And what will you do for a "replacement". Maybe we should review lost places and their possible replacements?

God, you guys have some chintzy friends! Whenever I give a couple candy, I make sure they BOTH have enough. I really LOVE sand-bagging the healthy eating habits of others!!!!!! How are you guys doing today? I'm getting ready to go down to the corner and kiss another store good-bye. It is sad, all the places going out of business. Catch ya later!

And here I thought Elmer only made glue. Isn't it nice to be "allowed" the whole little box as one serving? A student gave me a similar one-serving box. Pal was with me = two smaller servings. Sigh...
