Treadmills are great tools but they are not for everyone.  I myself cannot run on a treadmill, I get shin splints and my calves ache for a week, however, I know others who can only run on treadmills.  I prefer an elliptical they are easier on the joints, and still a great cardio.  You can still burn just as many calories on an elliptical as if you were running.  Another great feature is that you can change the intensity and incline to specifically target different parts of the body.  My favorite machine has two different modes for just the glutes and many others targeting calves, hammies,... read full review »

Using the elliptical machine gives my joints the rest they need from the daily pounding from running.  I hook up my iPod to my ears and go.  Plus with the multiple styles of workouts available I can concentrate on the type of workout I need that day.  You can focus on the upperbody, or lowerbody as you need it.  With a treadmill you can only run or walk.  I enjoy being able to mix the elliptical and treadmill workout, but when my knees are bothering me, I can always exercise on the elliptical without pain.  Both have their pros, but I can't find any cons with the elliptical.

WHile i've used a treadmill for years, my new discovery of the elliptical makes me want to change over. I get a better overall workout, and it doesn't get dull.

It does take some time to get used to this type of workout where a treadmill is just like walking. But once you are used to the elliptical, it has more benefits than just running or walking, and without the stress on your joints.
