"Eat, Love, Pray" is about one womans search through herself and three countries to find God and love herself. Although Gilbert is an easy enough to read writer with a funny and self depricating sense of humor, her illogical presuppositions in the beginning of the book about 'God' and religion ruin the journey. She says "Let me first explain why I use the word God, when I could just as easily use the word Jehovah, Allah, Shiva, Brahma, Vishnu or Zeus." This sort of illogical thinking does no service to her 'spiritual journey'. You cannot go assigning deitys of certain religions to other religions. What do these God's say about themselves according to their own scriptures? They would certainly not agree to all be lumped together into one called 'God'. This ruins the 'journey' for the reader, partly because it shows her lack of knowledge of these 'Gods', but also because it seems as if she has already arrived at her conlusions. She has already boxed 'God' into some sort of albeit vague, hazy and continually morphing, box! This seems to me the exact opposite of what she said she wanted to do. It is possible to be so inclusive that you lose respect for the separateness of the religions that she so completely assualted by lumping their deitys into one SuperPower.
