Question about wireless routers

I have a Linksys WRT 300N wireless router which is pretty old. It works fine, but there is one issue: I have Vonage, and when someone is on the telephone, I lose the wireless signal. This also happened when I had phone from the cable company. Does VOIP interrupt the wireless signal for all routers, or is it only on the old routers?

Thank you.

I wish I knew more about Vonage. I know what it is but not exactly how it works.

That said, many cordless phones use a wireless frequency that can interfere with wireless routers. When you use Vonage, do you generally use a cordless phone? If so, that phone may operate at the same 2.4 GHz frequency that WiFi (the connection for the wireless router) uses.

I may be showing my ignorance of Vonage by writing that! All I can say is that lots of cordless phones interfere with wireless routers. I specifically bought a cordless phone that operates at 5.8 GHz, just so it wouldn't interfere with my wireless router.

A-ha! Why, yes I do use a cordless phone! This could be the reason. Thank you.

Vonage uses a receiver that is daisy chained (modem to computer, computer to vonage, vonage to router) and uses the internet connection that way. so I wondered about it stopping the connection at the receiver when the phone rang. But the cable just had a phone jack in the modem box, so it's probably the cordless phone.

Thanks again... pd

Hi Pitcherday, You should look into that with Vonage b/c my parents have vonage an a wireless router and never have any problems.  They also use multiple cordless phones.  Have Vonage take a look, and if they can't fix it, have your internet company take a look.  And perhaps you do have outdated equipment, but hopefully you can get things replaced for free if it's vonage's fault

I agree with Bob, the wireless phone could be interfering with the wireless signal from the router.  Older wireless phones operate on the same 2.4Ghz band as your wireless router, so like Bob I bought wireless phones that operate at 5.8GHz, when I set-up my wireless network.   Check with Vontage and see what frequency the phones operate on.

I just went on Bob's suggestion that it might be the phone. The phone is years old. I just got a new one labeled "wifi compatible." It just finished charging and when we tried it out, no loss of wireless connection! Thanks Bob!
