Bear with me on this, since I do understand that you asked about Internet without phone service.

Sprint, Verizon and AT&T all have wireless high-speed Internet devices that give you DSL speeds. You do not have to get phone service from these vendors to get this Internet connectivity but you will have to pay about $60 per month for the high-speed wireless. Of the three, Sprint's wireless broadband service is the fastest and built out in more places. To use the service, you have to plug the company's wireless card into a USB port on your computer -- the cards are actually pretty small.

You can use these on the road, even in a moving car. I travel with mine and use it at the airport, in my hotel room or even sitting on a park bench. Imagine a WiFi connection that covers most of the country -- that's what this service gives you. I've connected at speeds up to 1 megabit per second with my Sprint card.

I forget what AT&T calls its wireless broadband service, but Sprint and Verizon call it EVDO. I think all three charge around $60 per month for the service and the card may be free if you get a 1-year contract. Otherwise, the card might be $50.

I have high speed internet through Comcast (my cable company) and I don't have cable nor do I have a home phone. The cost for me is around $45.  So try your local cable company.
