My husband has an offer for a pretty good discount on some Canon cameras.  Since I've been wanting one, I'm doing my research.  These are the only 4 choices out of the list we are allowed to choose from.  Anybody who knows anything about these 4, let me know what you think!  At this point, even the CHEAPEST on the list is much better than my current.  I'll be looking for reviews too but figured someone here might be able to quickly compare them.

Also, I'm kind of surprised to see that only the expensive version is marked as having "panoramic" mode, which my current camera as and I love... so I think I gotta look at the samples in the store more and see if that's really true!  I don't think i'd get the pricest one JUST for panoramic, but I'll definitely be missing that feature if the others don't have it.

  • Canon - Powershot 10.0-Megapixel Digital ELPH Camera (sd1200is) - cheapest
  • Canon - PowerShot 12.1-Megapixel Digital ELPH Camera (sd780is)
  • Canon - Powershot 12.0-Megapixel Digital ELPH Camera (sd960is)
  • Canon - PowerShot 12.1-Megapixel Digital ELPH Camera (sd970is) - most expensive

I have two Canon PowerShot digital cameras and have used both extensively. One is my primary camera and I use it all the time; the other is my backup camera.

My experience with Canon cameras is that they are easy to use and generally take pictures at the highest level for that class of camera. If you look at the pictures I post with my reviews (other than movie reviews), these are all taken with my Canon PowerShot G7 and PowerShot A700 cameras. That said, I don't have experience with any of the models you mention.

What's the difference in price from the cheapest to the most expensive on your list? If it's $30, I'd get the most expensive camera. If it's $130, I'd have to consider the features.

Thanks bob!  I read some negative reviews of ALL of them - people stating bad picture quality.  HOWEVER in reading mot of those reviews it sounded like they were all trying to use the "auto" features and weren't very savvy about the cameras.  Some even said they only had them a few weeks.  Here's the pricing (not counting taxes/accessories) and megapixels / zoom too

  • Canon - Powershot 10.0-Megapixel Digital ELPH Camera (sd1200is) - $176 - 10 mp - 3x
  • Canon - PowerShot 12.1-Megapixel Digital ELPH Camera (sd780is) - $214 - 12.1 mp - 3x
  • Canon - Powershot 12.0-Megapixel Digital ELPH Camera (sd960is) - $241 - 12.0 mp - 4x
  • Canon - PowerShot 12.1-Megapixel Digital ELPH Camera (sd970is) - $277 - 12.1 mp -5x
  • Right now i'm thinking about the middle two.  We are going to the store today to take a closer look but don't buy in the store so I still have time to mull it over :)

That's a great price for the SD970is. I checked it on Amazon and it's $349. Is your price from a reputable dealer? I wouldn't chance buying something like a camera from a store you haven't heard of, as there are lots of scams on this kind of gear. If the price sounds a little too good to be true, it probably is.

My preference would be to go for the better zoom cameras, so I'd recommend the ones that are 4x or 5x. If you know what you're doing, you can get some nice effects by zooming.

    Good luck!

We buy direct from the manufacturer for most of these deals - they are specials for employees where my husband works.   I don't know if I'm willing to spend that much for a camera right now though, so I was starting to think there's no point in getting a new one if the zoom is going to be the same as my current.  I think I might hold off until next year and see what kind of cameras they offer.

I have a Canon PowerShot that was given to me by my daughter.  I love it.  It can be fully automatic, yet gives options for settings of a portrait, landscapes, etc.  I have used it for  about 1 1/2 years now.  The pictures on my profile page were mostly taken with it.
