Yes. I tried the Majicjack. It didn't work for me. The voice quality was terrible. And there wasn't a local area code. It's a great idea, but didn't work for me. Try Vonage. It does work . Voice quality is great. And it really is only $25.00 a month

I use magic jack.  Couple things:

1.  I do love it.  Great for small business.  Have three PA's with phone numbers in numerical order, they can be mobile and answer as if in the office with their own mobile access to files, chat, voice and video conference ability, this is cheaper than skype.  I dig.  In my line of work, the mobile office is cornerstone and Magic Jack is working out nicely.

2.  Here's the rub for me.  I need to import contacts and can't figure it out.  Nothing in the manual, the tools only give you single entry options, and I can't for the life of me figure out where the address book is kept.  Does anyone know where the info is stored, in what format, and  what program best to edit the database?

Please tell me, someone, that this is possible.  It's almost a dealbreaker if it can't be done.

Oh yeah, who has a favorite kind of land phone they like to use with the Magic Jack?

I run www.magicjackchat.com, Magic Jack is a great alternative.  Considering I use it over $14.99 a month DSL that means for the entire year I pay only 1 month bill if I was to combine regular phone bill averge + DSL charge ($80 most people pay for both).

It's very easy to use, no CD, no driver installations.  I think it's going to revolutionize the game.

what gets me is the skill level of their support personnel.  everytime i've had to call on them, they've always have been able to get me working again.  so say what you will about the device.  the truth of a company is in the quality of their support mechanism.

and yes, i'm very cognizant of the fact that you use the people from india to do support.  as much as i despise dealing with them (dell support for instance), magicjack seems to have a handle on training them well.  kudos to all involved.

try looking in this directory (in vista): C:\Users\YOURUSERID\AppData\Roaming\mjusbsp\ the contact list is kept on the magicjack drive itself in the magicjack directory, it's called addressbook.xml. i'm pretty sure that you can import from an xml file, but i could be wrong. depending on what format you want to export out to magicjack, you might wanna try saving it out to an .xml file, then importing it from there.

My brother has one that he was thrilled with for a while but he's not too happy with it anymore.  He always sounds like he's talking in a vacuum so I hate talking to him on it.  He has also told me that customer service is basically non-existent.  He calls it the "Unhelp Desk" LOL.  Oh, and I don't think you get any 911 service with it so if it's your main phone line that could be an issue. I thought about getting one just to have a 2nd line for work and faxing but I changed my mind when my brother became unhappy with it.

I got one and it was horrible. My voice skipped and dragged and there were long silences for the other party. I could hear myself speak on a delay and couldn't talk until it stopped. Also, it was practically impossible to use if someone was on the computer. I threw it away.

I have a friend who has multiple of them and he loves them for his business b/c it gives him multiple numbers for such a cheap price.  I guess it depends on what you need it for!  Magic jack is a lot cheaper than getting 4-5 new lines in your house.

No matter who you are talking to if one of you is using VOIP (voice over internet protocol) you most likely will experience the voice issues that several of you describe.  Unless your internet connection is "pristine" and your DSL does not go through a "repeater" due to dustance from Central office this is your choice.  I'm not sure what I would expect when I am paying $19.95 per year for unlimited international phone service.  I would think that for me it works as expected.

I expected that I would be able to have a conversation with another person, which I was not able to no matter how close or far they were. I wouldn't have tried it but so many people think it's great. I don't know what the deal is with Des Moines, but if I had turned my $20 into quarters and threw them into wishing wells, that would have been a more worthwhile investment.
