Effexor xr is in the class of meds called SSRI (selective seratonin reuptake inhibitors). It is used to produce a number of desired effects, however the first among them and the most prescribed is for sufferers of depression and anxiety. I have been using Effexor for 2 years now, and I must say it certainly has helped to improve my down and out rattled self after a lengthy divorce. Althoughit takes at least a month of daily oral consuption, the drug seems to slowly but surely work, aleviating me of dreadful panic attacks and feelings of worthlessness which I had experienced before taking it. You will not feel a sudden rush of peace like that which accompanies xanax or ativan. The drug is much more subtle. If you do begin to take it, like I said you will need to wait a MINIMUM of 30 days before you and possibly others will notice the benefical effects. I have recently tried to cut back on my dosage, and began to experience mild withdrawal in the forms of what feels like jolts of electricity zapping my brain, increased heart rate, sweating, and insomnia so I have resumed my previous dosage and all has returned to normal. I do not care what health professionals say (since the drug has not been out there very long) but there are definte withdrawal symptoms associuated with this drug. If you do not believe me, look at the thousands of testimonials which litter WEB MD. Overall. it is worth taking this drug if you feel depressed or anxious, but be aware that result will take some time to see.

i dont know if you are sexually active, but if you are do you see any sexual side effects from the effexor? i have heard and read that it can cause problems having an orgasam or even being able to get an erection. i have been on this med for about 6 months and have had no problems, but my doctor has recently increased my dose and i'm curios what to expect

I agree with you about the drug taking awhile to work for most people but that is not true for everyone. I was told it would take 30 to 60days before I started to see affects and it started to work for me within two weeks. In addition, I have had to be off it for up to 10 days because of my doctors stupid office help and I did not suffer any withdrawal symptoms except that my depression came back. I have been taking it for about a year and think it is great.
