Edsal MaxiRack Extra Heavy Duty Boltless Storage Shelving  —

By day I am a degreed engineer so I have a pacticed eye for how things are made.

These shelves are utter crap. A poster child for corporate cost reduction gone wild. The plywood shelves are simply too small (length and width) and fall through the frame under any reasonable load. It also appears that the frame was designed for a thicker piece of plywood...

I would go so far to rate these shelves as defective and potentially dangerous in their current state. If Home Despot has any stones they would eat the loss and get these off the market.

Between this and another recent disappointing purchase I made at Home Despot, I wont be goint there anymore if I can avaoid it.

About a year ago I bought some of the Edsal racks from The Home Depot. They were nice and solid. 3/4" particle board for shelves. You had a choice between 4' and 6' long Z-bar support channels that connected to solidly built end frames. You could buy each one separately, because if you were going to connect the shelves together, end to end, you only needed 3 end peices instead of 4, because you could connect to either side of the frame that was in the center. Yesterday, I went back to get a couple more end pieces, because I wanted to separate the three shelf run that I had and move one of the shelves on the other side of the room and add another 4' shelf. Now the The Home Depot only sells a complete 6' long, 3 shelf section in a box. So, in stead of buying one $25 end piece, I was forced to buy a $149 complete 6' section...and they discontinued the 4' sections. Then to top it all off, when I opened the box, they no longer had the 3/4" particle board for shelving. Now it's only a half in thick. You're right, POC. HD can KMA.

There is a part 2 to all of this...

I went to Lowe's and bought their Edsal shelves. They cost $4.00 more ($66). It is amazing the difference $4 can make ! The frame pieces are much stiffer and the plywood shelves are perfectly fitted.

I have to drive quite a bit further to get to the Lowe's in my area but I dont care. I'm never shopping Home Despot again as long as I live.
