In our quest to once and for all bring some organization to our garage we purchased a couple of sets of Edsal MaxiRack Extra Heavy Duty Boltless Storage Shelving.   After struggling to put together this manufacturer's Medium Duty Clip Style Storage Shelves (you did read that review, didn't you?) this was a completely different experience.

Edsal MaxiRack Extra Heavy Duty Boltless Storage Shelving

Unlike the Medium Duty Shelving that assembled by engaging matching sharp edged clips, this 72"x36"x18" shelving unit assembles by matching a pair of steel rivets on the cross members to key-hole slots on the upright supports.  This is a much better arrangement for assembly.  The steel rivets of the cross members are lined up with the key-hole slots, twisted slightly until they engage and finally tapped into place with a rubber mallet.

As each new level is added to the unit, the shelf insert is placed adding to the rigidity of the unit.  The shelves are unfinished, so I do recommend a coating of polyurethane on them to protect against dampness.

This kit can be used to either make a 72" shelving unit or 2 - 36" units that can function as a work bench.

Although I found it much easier to assemble than its medium-weight cousin, an extra pair of hands will make assembly easier and quicker.

The manufacturer claims that this shelving unit will support 4,000 evenly distributed pounds.  I'm not sure I'm buying this claim, but I don't expect to be testing it.

My Viewpoint

For an additional $10 or so, I recommend the Edsal MaxiRack Extra Heavy Duty Boltless Storage Shelving system over its medium weight cousin.  While you may not need the extra strength, you'll appreciate the higher quality.  This unit is also sold under Home Depot's Workforce brand for around $46.00.  For open shelving needs it gets my recommendation.

Regards,

Rudi
