Edenpure solicited me with mailings. This is 5 or so years ago.Their Edenpure Infra-red Space Heater was really talked up in their 'scientific presentations' and testimonials. They had 2 sizes:the 1000 and 750 watts. They were fairly expensive but they discounted your purchase when you observed the time limit in their mailer.I bought 2.One was for my daughter. It was cool to the touch so very appealing with a baby and small dog around.I got her the larger size but we had the smaller one.It had no wheels,a bit cumbersome. It did last almost 3 winters and I began to think that here was a company that stood behind what it claimed.Well..yes and no.I got too stimulated;I liked the type of heat,it was good for my dust and mold allergies. The heater blew air noisily over the infra-red bulb. This was the 1st design.I'm now very wary of buying 1st designs. My stimulation prompted me to buy 3 refurbished heaters when we moved to a larger apartment.None of them worked for more than 30 days:one only blew cool air;the 3rd didn't even start. I negotiated my money back on the first one but thepacking I had to do with original cardboard and everything was a hassle,as was waiting for UPS who seemed to take their time when it came to hauling heaters back to Canton,OH since there were so many of them.I was approved for the 2nd refund by the President of the company;but he was vetoed by a customer service rep who refused to process it.Oh well, him being a busy scientist and all,I guess she should know who was really 'entitled' to arefund of a product that did not work. The 3rd they wanted to exchange for rather than refund my money but the price of the new ones had gone up and I wasn't enthusiastic anymore--the stimulation must have worn off.It could have something to do with the original heater's bulb burning out.I left for a weekend getaway and came home to find it noisily blowing air but NO HEAT. It needed to be shipped back to the factory at Whipple Ave. because the re-installing a bulb on those early models was not customer or even local repairperson friendly.Again, waiting for the shipping. Meanwhile I stacked another huge original cardboard box on top of the others waiting for Ms.All-powerful Customerservice to relax her grip and let me have my money back--for 2 units anyway. They wouldn't let me exchange any new model for any refurbished one which they almost 'swore' to be just-as-good without me waiving the discount price, appreciably higher by now.I said "no thanks" but i wrote a letter about my experience to the President and his 'associates or colleagues' I'm not sure which.Do scientist/engineers still run the Edenpure company?Maybe they shouldn't 'run it' but have REAL decision-making power. We had the precedent of Thomas A.Edison opening his own electric company municipal power utility because he had to.But,customers of Edison Whatever Inc. today know that the respective 'Ms.Cusomer Servant-from-Hades' is openly in charge now. This experience is strong evidence that science & commerce are not an easily functioning integratable combination, and thecustomer to is the most likely to be left holding the bag. Old style,time-tested 'brick and mortar' purchases may prove safer than direct factory purchases. But I hate to see technology not get to us unless some huge corporate or government authority from on high says we're allowed to have it.So let's press on through the thick and thin of an imperfect world loaded with modern inconveniences.Perhaps we'll see the 'Viewpoint" of some celebrity who, after endorsing a product, actually used it and found it less than what he/she had built it up to be.
