Ebay is my hidden gem when it comes to art work. Bottom line: It is a great way for artists to get noticed & buyers to get originals!

Over the last few years, I have combed Ebay weekly to see what great new art work they have up.

I generally look for art that I like (I dont worry about the artists name or potential value of a piece). I am a firm believe that you should buy art that makes you feel good. And, that is a very personal decision. So, inevitably, I end up supporting a lot of starving arts that are still trying to make it. The good news for me is that I care about the arts and have a soft spot for artists. So, by buying online through ebay, I get great work, get it cheap, and also support people trying to "make it". What could be better?!

Here's a few tips, if you choose to buy art work online at Ebay:

  • Look at the photos really closely. Notice that people use "fake" rooms to show what their art looks like in the rooms and often it is not to scale (so it can be deceiving)
  • Look for close-ups so that you can tell texture, color, etc. And, if the photos arent great-- request additional ones.
  • Take note of framing. Has the piece been framed or not? Look for words like stretched canvas. A  good indicator is shipping. It is probably pretty cheap if they can roll up the art work and put it in a tube... which means, it is not ready to hang
  • Look for words like authentic, hand signed, original. In many cases, people do digital printing or other shady tactics and you dont get what you pay for
  • Do your homework on expensive items. If you're buying a Chagall or Miro or other famous artist that is often replicated, look into the buyer. Is it a reputable gallery? Does it come with authenticity papers? And, arrange a call. Anything over $250 seems worthy of a call. (there are shady people out there!)

Bottom line, you can get some really good art deals on Ebay if you spend the time looking. You just have to be patient, ask the right questions, and you are well on your way to a fun and original home for cheap.
