Earth's Best Organic Baby Food —

I am kind of a health nut when it comes to my kids food and diet. As I get older, I appreciate now more than ever that good food is so important-- as are good eating habits. I am trying to set a model for my kids of healthy eating. Dont worry-- I am not pyscho about it. We just dont opt for french fries and burgers. Not my style.

When my kids were babies I had 3 options for food (1) make it myself (2) buy regular (3) buy organic.

My take on option 1: MAKE IT MYSELF. Come on! Too much work. I am a working Mom! I didnt really want to spend my time making food. I have precious little time-- I would rather spend my time hanging out with my kids. The pro, however, was that I loved that the options were endless if I made the food myself.

My take on option 2: BUY REGULAR. Okay, so you dont know my Mom. She is very into organic. She basically told me that she would buy my kids organic food if I didnt. She wasnt kidding either. She visits my kids weekly and literally brought 50 jars with her a week! WOW! It helps that she manages a friend's Health Food store a few days a week and gets a huge discount.

My take on option 3: ORGANIC. When I looked at the ingredients on the regular baby food and the organic it was a no brainer for me. I was shocked to see how many normal baby foods had all kinds of other ingredients other than the product itself. For example, when you buy organic peas, you get peas and water as the ingredients. When you buy non-organic, in many cases, you get peas, salt, etc.

So, I decided to go for Organic (my mom getting the food was a huge influencer!). At the time, Earth's Best was one of the only options available. Since then, Gerber and others have launched a line too. I like the options that Earth's Best has and the food tastes good-- even I would eat it! The downside is that it is expensive.... so it costs a bit more than the average food. (sometimes double) However, the sales are so good now that you can generally get a good deal.

The downside is that they dont have a ton of varieties. So, in order to have diversity in their diet, you may have to introduce some other brands. That is what I did.

Our favorites: Sweet potatoes, blueberry blends, apple blends, chicken. (MY KIDS WERE ALLERGIC TO THE CORN ONES!)

Overall, I would recommend Earth's Best. Your babies will be off to a healthy start.

In response to HealthyMom's comment from Mar 10, 2008 at 8:38PM:

kudos to you. Working a minimum of 60 hours a week, I just didnt have it in me to make my own baby food. I know my own limits and making food was my breaking point. Being able to buy organic baby food was a fair compromise to me-- and I feel like I got my kids off to a good start. :)

In regards to the "working mom doesn't have time to make food" I beg to differ. I make all of my son's food and I have since he started cereal @ 4 1/2 mths. He is now almost 11 mths old and it is not difficult at all to find the time to make food. I work 3 1/2 days a week and drive an hour one way to work and yet I still find time. I figured if I was going to breast feed for 9 mths how can I not continue that healthy trend by giving him organic food and doing it in a less costly manner by making it myself. If you think that it is too difficult get the book "Super Baby Food" and you may change your mind.
thanks, Mariah
