Eagle Bend Golf Club - Bigfork, MT —

INTRO
I grew up playing golf at Eagle Bend, so my number of rounds on this course are easily in the hundreds. At the time, it was the absolute best course in the surrounding area. Even with the slew of great new courses, Eagle Bend still consistently ranks amongst the best.

THE COURSE
Jack Nicklaus was involved in the design of the original course. As a kid, I remember walking side by side with him as he played a ceremonial practice round.

With the somewhat recent addition of another nine holes, it is now a 27-hole layout. The 18-hole course meanders up and around the side of a small mountain. The nine-hole course is relatively flat and borders Flathead Lake. Both courses have incredible views and many holes provide a sense of solitude, even with quite a number of homes nearby.

It is an extremely fair and straight forward course - with only a few holes which require some "target golf" and local knowledge. My two favorite holes are the par-3 6th and the par-3 4th (I was lucky enough to once get a hole-in-one on the 4th hole). These two holes (along with a few others) offer drastic changes in elevation. Overall, it is just a solid course in great condition with scenery around every corner.

QUALITY
Tee Boxes - flat
Fairways - green and lush
Greens - firm and true
Sand - just like the beach
Clubhouse/Pro Shop - modern with amenities of a private club

PRICE
The $100 rate (cart included) is slightly pricey for locals. It is almost worth the price, but frankly, I think the somewhat recent increase in price is a little too steep. To be fair, it is competitively priced compared to courses in Chicago, for example. But this isn't Chicago, it is Montana. At least offer some twilight rates for those interested in keeping the "Ben Franklin" in the wallet.

MY VIEWPOINT
Even with the high price, if you have the chance to play golf in northwest Montana, Eagle Bend should be at the top of your list.
