ER —

Intro
While at one time I tuned into ER because it was the finale of NBC's Must See TV Thursday, I now watch three different networks on Thursday night with Survivor on CBS and Gray's Anatomy on ABC, but still I go back to NBC for ER. It now is a draw in and of itself.

Stars
Throughout its seventeen season duration, ER has been through so many cast changes, that there isn't presently anyone on the show that was on at its inception. While the show began with such stars as George Clooney, Anthony Edwards, and Noah Wyle, it now stars John Stamos, Maura Tierney, and Mekhi Phifer. Sometimes even more impressive are the appearces of guest stars like Alan Alda Bob Newhart, Rosemary Clooney, Sally Field, and Don Cheadle. Some of the stars have been made on the show and moved on such as Clooney, and others are already known actors, but eagerly join the show to be part of such an amazing ensemble, like Stamos.

Plot
The show covers the working and personal relationships of doctors and nurses working the ER at a fictional hospital in Chicago. The subplots over the years have always been topical and many turn into water cooler discussions the next day, as they cover social issues such as different sides  of the abortion debate, addiction, homosexuality, and during this past season finale anti-war demonstrations. The writers manage to weave the stories through their characters, yet still allow us to take a stand the way we believe in our hearts. And every time I've been to the local ER in the past thirteen years, I sit and compare the show to the real situation, looking to see if I hear the medical jargon from the show.

Downside
If there was anything that took away from this show it would be too few new episodes. Sometimes it feels like months in between fresh episodes, and that's not including the summer hiatus. Every time you get involved in a storyline, they air repeats for several weeks. It's very frustrating, but makes me look forward to the show returning each time even more.

Conclusion
While many have been expecting ER to spell its demise, predicting that the show would get stale, it simply hasn't. There's never been a time where I wasn't glued to the screen. It manages to pull out amazing storylines each episode without ever having to jump the shark. As long as the show continues to evolve with different stars, characters, and topical stories, it stays fresh, and has the ability to continue on for quite some time. And after this past season finale, I'll be spending all summer waiting to find out if Dr. Kovac's plane is going to be befell by terrorists and what will happen to poor Neelah being trampled at the anti-war rally she stumbled into.

I believe that its never boring because it hasn't lost its shock value with the images they present when they kill off a main character. I believe that the only main character with a non-horrific death was Dr. Green (Anthony Edwards). It was sad but not horrific. I mean, Dr. Romano (Paul McCrane) was hurt by a helicopter twice.
And I beg to differ, there is one cast member that has been there since the beginning, Haleh (played by Yvette Freeman).
I don't know if I am the only one that noticed but Haleh said "And Dr. Carter might be coming back soon," when she was talking to Jeanie Boulet (former cast member Gloria Ruben, who came back for one episode this past season.).
Sorry, I'm all blah, blah, blah. I just love ER! :D

really nicely written review, LauraBelle. Having been an English major in high school and college, I was going to review ER as it is one of my favs as well....I watch the same Thurs. lineup as you. After reading your review, I could not have done any better a job. Kudos to you!
