I think that the Dyson DC 14 works really well for animal hair.  I have used other brands such as Hoover and they just don't seem to pick up the pet hair as well.  It is pretty lightweight, but a little awkward to carry up and down stairs.  The attachments for the stairs don't work the greatest, but they are okay.
