LOVE my Dyson Animal. I had a Hoover Windtunnel before that I THOUGHT worked well. When it died, I didn't care for the newer Hoovers or any other uprights I was finding....the better ones were all self-propelled and were HEAVY and with a 4 level split, they wouldn't have worked.
I read Consumer Reports who gave less than glowing reviews for the Dysons, but then I started reading actual customer reviews for the Consumer Reports recommended models and for the Dysons and based on those, Dyson was the better choice. I compared them in store, and was stil somewhat hesitant, but I bought the Dyson.
I've had it for 4 or 5 years now and I absolutely love it. I was leary of a bagless as I have allergies and was concerned about a mess when emptying, but this empties so easily, I can put it down inside my trashcan and no worries at all. On the occasion I do spill a little dust in my own clumsiness, it's no messier than changing a full bag on a bagged upright.
What still impresses me is the ability to pick up cat litter on the first pass. All vacuums I've had in the past would spit the litter out behind them and took several passes to get most of the litter. With the Dyson, whatever's in the path gets sucked up. It's great! Also love my motorized stair tool and the bare floor option works extremely well too.
And it really doesn't lose suction UNLESS you get a clog in the tubing which I have done once or twice, but that's a simple fix of disconnecting the hose and unclogging it.
Like I said, I thought my old vacuum did a great job. But still after just vacuuming, if you laid on the floor, you'd easily find a few cat hairs. With the Dyson, after vacuuming, you can get down on your hands and knees and run your hands over the carpet repeatedly and NO CAT HAIR! Awesome!
The only con I can think of is that it does tip easily if you don't have it at jsut the right angle when using the attachments. Well, that and it's pricey.....but it was worth every penny in my 3 cat, one child household. And the price is offset somewhat if you're moving from a bagged vacuum or one that has pricey filters that need to be replaced frequently.
