I love my Dyson!
That sentence just about says it all. Let me start out by saying that I am single, with no children or pets in the house. I suffer from terrible allergies that seem to be even more aggravated in the summer and fall months. After seeing all the commercials featuring Mr. Dyson himself, and hearing all the praises my friends had to offer, I decided to invest in one.
The Purchase
I received a coupon in the mail from Bed Bath and Beyond (the infamous 20% off one item that comes about twice a month) and knew that I would buy my Dyson there. I browsed prices online and they were all comparable to one another. I went to BB&B and found my Dyson sitting by himself on the shelf. Like a puppy that just had to be taken home (yes I know I have issues). The wondeful sales associate Ted was nice enough to haul it up front for me (it fit awkardly in the cart). When the cashier told me that the total with tax was $480 I proudly handed her my coupon. I saved almost $100! They helped me to my car and made sure I didn't have any trouble loading it into my backseat.
The first use
I called my friend Julie and asked her if she wanted to come over and watch me vacuum. I explained that I just got my new Dyson and I wanted her to help me 'test the waters'. I even offered to let her spill crumbs for me. I still don't understand why she said no. I wanted to have my first experience to be like the commercial. I used my old vacuum (a $100 Dirt Devil) and went through the entire house. I picked up a quarter of a container (also bagless) of dust. That is relatively common for my home and is not considered alot by some people with kids and pets. I then plugged in my Dyson and went to town. HOLY COW...I could not believe the crap it was picking up. I was literally dumbfounded as I watched this monster of a vacuum pick up a half a container of stuff in the first two rooms. I have never accumulated that amount of dust/dirt with my old machine even if I went through the whole house! And now...in only two rooms I have more dirt than I ever thought possible.
By the time I finished the container (see pic) was entirely full. I could not believe it. No wonder my allergies were so bad, no wonder I couldn't stop sneezing...
The attachments
The Dyson does not have a traditional vacuum design. It takes awhile to get used to using the different attachments and transitioning to them smoothly. After a week I was going from floor to couch with minimal disruption. I was able to attach the different tools like a pro. There is a crevice attachment for small corners/spaces, a furniture attachment, and an attachment with bristles for vents/blinds, etc.
The 'stuff'
I talked earlier about my canister being full. Upon further investigation the stuff turned out to be of a sand consistency. This thing really does have some major suction going on! I couldn't believe that amount of dirt was in my house that I spend so much time and effort keeping clean.
The addiction
For the first 3 months I think I vacuumed everyday. I quickly became the center of everyone's jokes but I didn't care. My boyfriend thought I was completely insane, but I didn't care. Everyone made fun of me and I DIDN'T CARE. That machine helped dramatically with my allergy symptoms and it seemed no one could understand how relieved I was to be able to sit and have a normal conversation without sneezing every 3 seconds.
Final Thoughts
Although $400+ seems like a lot to spend on a vacuum I feel it is worth every penny. I would recommend this machine to anyone, especially if they have pets.
