I was inspired to buy the Dymo LetraTag label maker after reading a productivity book called "Getting Things Done" that stated that a key factor in getting a handle on life's daily tasks was to have the ability to label file folders easily and quickly. I picked up the Dymo LetraTag as a part of a combination pack with three label cartridges at BJ's Wholesale Club for about thirty dollars.
Using the Dymo LetraTag
Using this product is simple. It requires four AA batteries for power. The top flips up to accommodate the label cartridge. Type in the words on the non-QWERTY style keyboard, hit the PRINT button, and then punch the label cutter to remove your label and apply it to whatever suits your fancy.
Uses for the Dymo LetraTag labelmaker
I've used this label maker to label all of my file folders at home, as well as my filing cabinet drawers. Recently I purchased a number of canvas bins for my closet and was pleased to find that the label maker tape adheres reasonably well to the canvas fabric, allowing me to put labels on the bins to make sure I keep putting everything in the right place now that the closet is organized. I also use the label maker for tab labels in my desktop organizer, and my husband uses the labels for CD's he's burned.
Drawbacks
There are mercifully few drawbacks to this product. It's very easy to use, but the keyboard isn't laid out QWERTY style, which sometimes leaves me hunting and pecking for a letter a little longer than I would like. The labels sometimes peel up on file folders, but they seem to stick well most of the time. The refill cartridges can get pricey, costing over $10 in some places.
Cat's Bottom Line
I long to be organized, but after years of rebelling against my mother's hyper-organized lifestyle, I find it very, very tedious and difficult. The Dymo LetraTag label maker has helped me get a handle on some things, and while I'm not an organized pro yet, I definitely have made some forward progress in my quest for a neat and orderly environment. Baby steps, right? I recommend this label maker to anyone who wants to take their home office or home environment to the next level without spending an inordinate amount of money. When I'm feeling frazzled, I need only look at the rows and rows of perfect manila file folders with their perfectly lettered labels, and I feel some sense of order restored in my world. A zen-like peace? By some definition, perhaps.
