We adopted our dwarf rabbit, Hopper, as our daughter's first pet. We were concerned at first about a 2 and 1/2 year old and a rabbit getting along, but the two of them are now the best of friends. Dwarf rabbits are small, they are able to live in a cage (though you should let them out at least once a day if possible), they are inexpensive to feed, take minimal care, and can even be litter box trained!
These pets can be let free to roam the house as "house rabbits" or they can be contained in cages. We keep Hopper in a cage during the day while we're at work but let him out in the evenings and secure his location with a few baby gates. He never has accidents and ONLY goes potty in his cage, and the only trouble we've ever had is some chewing when we didn't bunny-proof well enough.
All in all I'd recommend a dwarf rabbit as a first pet, as an apartment pet, as a child's pet, and simply as a great pet in general. They are affectionate and snuggly, their cage needs to be cleaned only once per week, their feed and bedding is relatively affordable, and you'll get an endless supply of love from your little fluffball.
