We live in Upstate New York where the winters can be brutal.  Snow and ice storms often bring power failures that will leave you without heat.  Yankee ingenuity plans for all situations so we have several portable heaters to use depending on the situation.

We bought this kerosene heater for when the power is out.  We weren't sure what to expect but after using it for one year have decided that it is a good thing.  I say that with a warning under my breath to "Read the Instructions" before using it.  This is extremely important.

Fuel Tips:

I thought kerosene was kerosene but apparently not.  You need to use clean kerosene that is specifically made for heaters or you risk smoke and fumes.  Trust me, you don't want smoke and fumes in your home!

Starting Tips:

Don't think that you can simply pull out the heater, fill it with kerosene and light it.  It is a bit more involved than that.  You need to allow the fuel to sit for at least a half hour before lighting the wick.  This gives the wick time to absorb the fuel.  If you don't do this step correctly you could damage the wick.  The heater comes with a handle.  If you move it outside to light and extinguish it you will eliminate most of the kerosene smell from the house.

Safety Issues:

The heater is heavy when filled with fuel so if you are tiny you may need another person to help move it.  Don't worry about safety.  DuraHeat has that covered. If the heater were to tip over [I don't see how that is possible] it will instantly shut-off.  If your heater doesn't come with a manual siphon pump make sure to purchase one.  They make filling the heater a breeze and makes sure you don't have spills or messes to clean up...

Economical:

A full tank [about 2 1/2 gallons] will heat for about 12 hours.  The 23,000 BTUs  really throws the heat out and can keep an area of 1,000 sq feet nice and toasty.

Can be Used Indoors or Outdoors

I am too. I'm glad it worked out ok for you for the power outages. Thanks for the info.

I am very sensitive to smell and I could tell there were fumes but others say there aren't any fumes. We mainly use this for power outages and for that it has been great.

We may be moving upstate soon. Hopefully we won't need a heater. I'm nervous about these kind of heaters. Did you notice any fumes with the clean kerosene? It's hard for me to picture no fumes with kerosene.

Brrr - I'm glad I don't live up in the snow belt any more. ;>

Yep! Those New England winters can be brutal... The problem with this heater is it smells. I am sensitive to the smell; my husband is not. I think they are better "emergency" heaters but I know many people who use them a lot.

We have a similar heater. I am scared of it so I only use it when I can look at it and make sure we don't set on fire. I have a HUGE fear of fire although so far, none of our heaters has caused any problems.

We are going to have to look for a couple of small heaters for the new "old" house! Good review and thanks for the recommendation.
