Several years ago, one of my daughters was working at a local (Stamford, CT) Starbuck's clone type of coffee bar. I had been away for a few days on a business trip and as I got closer to home I thought I might drop into the coffee bar to surprise her.
When I entered the place she was nowhere in sight. As I turned to leave I heard "Hey Mr. Zee, she'll be back in a few minutes. She's on a mission and as soon as she gets back she's on break."
So of course I waited. In just a few minutes she returned carrying a small carton. Its contents? Cup after cup of Dunkin' Donuts coffee. Huh?
Yes, as it turns out, the entire staff was waiting for their DD coffee. "But you work in a coffee house", I said puzzled.
"Yeah, but Dunkin Donuts coffee tastes better", they chimed. Guess I wasn't the first to make this observation. I did notice that they quickly transferred the coffee into cups proclaiming "Coffee Tree".
My Take
I've never been overly impressed with Starbuck's (or Starbuck's Clone) coffee. To me it tastes strong and bitter just for the sake of tasting strong and bitter.
Dunkin' Donuts is a full bodied deep coffee with a unique taste to it. Never bitter, it has a very pleasant aftertaste and it stands up to cream quite well.
At its usual $8.99/lb it may be a little over-priced, but our local Dunkin' Donuts often runs specials a 2 lbs. for $10.99. That's a pretty decent price for daily coffee. And, at that price I'll usually pick up 4 lbs.
Needless to say, this is a coffee I enjoy as a daily brew. I do prepare it a bit stronger than is served in the store, but again, I never find it bitter. I highly recommend it.
