True fact: When my students would enter my English class, they would look for my coffee cup in the morning. If they saw it in my hands and the pot brewed, they knew it was safe to joke around and speak. In fact, my first year teaching they used to call my coffee cup a bowl because it was so big.
I love coffee. My life has always been busy and I thrive on caffiene. I am aware that I can get this drug through a variety of sodas, water and even gum now, but I enjoy the deep, full body, smooth taste of a great coffee at all hours of the day. I happen to be one of the few people that do not have trouble sleeping if I chug a cup or two at nine at night. I am aware of the oddity of all of this, I just don't care. It's a love affair that has developed over the last decade or so.
That said, I have always felt refreshed and somewhat ashamed by Starbucks. I love their coffee, it is wonderful. However, you have to wonder at the company that can open three locations in one shopping center and have them all be profitable. While I was living in Columbus, Ohio I seriously thought that Starbucks might have been run by the mob because there were five of them within a half-mile, and every one of them was very lucrative.
About a month ago, as I rushed past the coffee aisle to grab my bag of guilt, I was stopped by a petite, old woman. She was innocently giving samples of Dunkin' Donuts coffee. Needless to say I gratefully took a cup and fell in love. It was dark, rich, smooth and tasty. It was like I was in the greasy diner from high school all over again, being introduced to what would become my beverage of choice.
Dunkin' Donuts has only recently offered it's coffee to our markets in Ohio. The coffee is reasonably priced, made of quality beans, and fair-trade certified. (If you aren't familiar with fair-trade, I won't bore you to death. Instead go here to learn more and make up your own mind. http://transfairusa.org/ )
I must admit, I have a new coffee on my shopping list now. Plus, the website offers a coffee subscription called Regular Refills where you can have the coffee shipped to your doorstep every month.
I know I'm a bit nuts about my beans. However, you have to try this stuff before you decide on your favorite coffee. You may be persuaded!
