For as long as I can remember I've had an infatuation with Dremel Rotary Tools.  What's hard to understand?  I'm a male, the Dremel spins fast and it grinds, sands, cuts, drills and polishes.  Case closed.

Background

I remember watching my uncle using his Dremel.  I was always impresed with what he could do with this versatile tool.

At the time I was really into AMT 3-in-1 automobile models.  I would always opt to customize my new model.  So, I would take out the included putty and customize away.  It wasn't long before I realized that with the Dremel Rotary Tool I could really refine my designs.  Before you knew it I was winning local modeling competitions.  So, my dad, the least handy person I know (barring my brother) got me my own.  To this day I still own it.

Time Marches On

These days, the tools de jour are cordless.  So, when I saw the Cordless 7.2V  Dremel Multi Tool, I just knew I had to have it.  Never mind that I still had two perfectly good corded Dremels in my workshop, this was a want rather than a need,

Dremel Cordless Multi Tool 7700

The Dremel Cordless Multi Tool 7700 looks similar to the corded models that came before it except for the blunt rear portion where the 7.2V battery is housed.  Assembled, this tool is only 7" long and weighs 11 ounces with much of the weight found in the rear where the battery is found.  It is remarkably comfortable in your hand.

This particular model operates at two speeds.  In the low speed setting the speed is fixed at 7500RPM and in high at 15,000 RPM.  While this is slower than most corded models it is generally sufficient for most household chores.

Included Accessories

Although Dremel claims to include 50 attachments in the kit, this is an overstatement.  Allowing for duplicates and different sanding grade disks, the kit has more realistically about 15 different attachments that fit the 1/8th inch collet.  Fortunately, the Model 7700 accepts all Dremel accessories from previous models.  Additional accessories are widely available and relatively inexpensive.

Battery Life

Unlike the corded models that can run continuously indefinitely, the 7.2V battery can provide about 20 minutes of continuous operation.  Clearly, you are trading off operating tie for mobility.  In my experience though it has been rare for me to wear down a fully charged battery in a single use.  For most tasks, the tool is used for seconds at a time.  Recharging the fully drained 7.2V battery takes about 3 hours.

Uses

Given its small size this is an excellent tool to have on hand to cut, sand, drill, polish and shape items that are too small for conventional tools.  A Dremel, particularly a cordless Dremel can go where few power tools can go.

My Viewpoint

At approximately $40, the Dremel Cordless Multi Tool 7700 is among the most versatile tools to have in the house.  If you're looking for a gift for your favorite DIYer, your search is over.
