Anyone who is a Dr. Suess fan knows the old tale of "Horton Hears A Who." I went to see this with my parents and we all loved it. I'm not sure the kids got the jokes and I didn't hear a whole lot of laughing.
Jim Carrey does the voice of Horton, an elephant who lives in the Jungle of Nool. One day he is swimming and he thinks he hears something when a speck blows by. Being an elephant who has exceptional hearing (as elephants do) he is the only one who can hear this speck. It turns out that in this speck is a tiny community called Whoville. With an angry kangaroo, voice by Carol Burnett, in the front running of a mob trying to push Horton out of their quiet life, Horton and the Mayor of Whoville try to save the speck and Horton's sanity.
This is a great story for adults and perhaps teenagers. I'm not really sure if kids would get the whole context but I think they would enjoy the visualization. One part I did not care for were these hero fantasies Horton had in anime. It was very weird. The evil kangaroo is great as is Hortons bestfriend, and a little yellow fluffball that is just cute to watch. The end of the movie also has a great old hit song, "I Can't Fight This Feeling Anymore" by REO Speedwagon.
Elephants and kangaroos and specks, oh my!
